HUZZAHH!!!! A million thanks to you, Kind2creatures, for this excellent suggestion!! \n \nIt hasn\'t all been perfect, but this is obviously a major key to my problems. I\'ve been experimenting with it for several months now and here is what I\'ve learned: \n
\nHowever... \n
\nI\'ve been doing some more research, and the DermaMag site at magnesiumdirect.com has some useful info, unlike the Swanson site. For their product at least, they say 8 sprays on each arm & leg (32 total) is approximately 400 mg of elemental Mg, which is about what you\'re supposed to have. So my 5 sprays per arm/leg (20 total) was well under the recommended dosage, and 5 sprays only on my arms (10 total) was much too little. No wonder I didn\'t get the full benefit! \n \nSo now I\'m working on increasing my dosage. The Swanson product seems to work but my skin doesn\'t like it. Ancient Minerals has an aloe-based gel product that looks good, but it\'s a bit spendy -' + '- almost a dollar a day in smaller quantities. I think I\'ll give it a try and see if I can tolerate it better than the Swanson\'s. \n \nThe writeups at magnesiumdirect.com claim that mag oil is actually very beneficial for dry-skin problems like eczema and psoriasis. Their customer testimonials include several people who say it helped their skin. That seems surprising to me, given how it irritated my skin, but maybe it was just too intense and concentrated for my skin to tolerate. Maybe working up in concentration would give my skin a chance to heal. Living in dry Colorado, winters have always been an itchy misery for me. If mag oil could cure my dry/itchy skin in addition to the miraculous improvement in my sleep, I wouldn\'t care WHAT it cost!!! \n \nSo: If you have problems with restless legs, sleep problems, muscle cramps, or many other problems, take a look at mag oil. It really does appear to help a wide range of problems! \n \nThanks again to everyone for your help! \nGary\r\n | \r\n

Sleep, muscle tics / restless legs / etc -- calcium?
In the last 5 years or so I've started developing muscular "tics," mostly in my chest and arms. This happens at night, making it very difficult to sleep. I also have a history of restless legs -- since I was a child, almost 50 years -- but this chest thing is different. It's not the same "oh my GOD I have to move NOW or I'll go insane" effect as restless legs, but more of an involuntary tic.
At about the same time I started having periods of wakefulness where I would wake and be "wired" and agitated. My chest/arm tics would usually kick in at the same time. (But not the restless legs, oddly enough.) I eventually discovered that calcium (actually cal/mag) helped dramatically. If I woke up I could count on hours of restless thrashing -- but if I took a 250mg calcium pill I'd zonk out in 5 minutes. I found I could take a 250mg pill at bedtime and I wouldn't wake in the night. It gradually got worse so that it would take 2-3 pills at bedtime, then even that wasn't enough to sleep through the night. Currently I take 2 at bedtime, then 1-2 each time I wake -- which is usually 2-3 times a night. I keep the pills & water at my bedside because getting up seems to worsen the wakefulness. So I've found a pretty benign way to control these symptoms, but they're still disturbing and they're gradually getting worse. I would really like to find a root cause, or at least something that would work better than the calcium. It feels like a reactive band-aid fix instead of a real solution. BTW I ran this by my MD, who is extremely naturally/nutritionally oriented, and she basically ignored it, which surprised me. Thanks for any suggestions! Gary |
