Los Angeles, California, July 27, 2007 The results of a clinical trial investigating the effects of Jarrow Formulas silicon supplement BioSil, which contains a choline-stabilized and concentrated form of orthosilicic acid, ch-OSA, on hair thickness, strength and elasticity, was presented by University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy Professor R. Randall Wickett at the Fifth International Congress of Hair Research held in Vancouver Canada on June 13-16, 2007.
An international research team conducted a 9-month, randomized, double-blind placebo controlled study using 48 healthy Caucasian women with fine hair and an average age of 43.3 years. Half the women supplemented their regular diet with 10 mg of silicon in the form of choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid, while the other half received a placebo.
The BioSil group experienced a significant improvement over the placebo group including:
- Increased cross sectional area of hair fibers: 7.8 percent increase average (twice the placebo group)
- Increased diameter of hair fibers: 3.8 percent increase average (1.7 percent for the placebo group).
- Hair tensile strength and elasticity decreased significantly in the placebo group (- 10.8 %) whereas in the BioSil group no significant change was observed.
Thanks Harry, I went to the Jarrow link and asked
for a free sample. My hair is ultra fine and seems to
be thinning a bit lately. :x
I've always liked Jarrow products and find them to
be dependable.

Another form of silica also seems to improve the thickness of thinning hair:
Quote:
GHENT, NY – According to a study published in Kosmetische Medizin, Hubner Original Silica Gel taken for six months can increase hair thickness by nearly 13 percent.
According to the researchers, the objective of this clinical phase II pilot study was to determine the increase in volume of hair over a six-month period of taking 15 ml of silicium gel orally once daily.
The study participants were 55 healthy adult women with thin hair (< 100 mm in diameter). Hair volume increased over the six-month trial period from 58.96 8.23 to 66.42 9.67 mm (or 13%).
Lead researcher I. Zschocke1, writes, “Though largely determined by heredity, hair thickness is also influenced by various factors such as nutrition. Persons with thin hair frequently suffer a considerable psychological strain, and a great many patients seek help from dermatologists and health care centers for treatment. Various studies have established that hair diseases have strong adverse effects on an individual’s quality of life.”

I've been using the biosil for about 2 years. It works great. My hair is very healthy and my nails strong. It's suppose to help the construction of your skin also.
All that hair falling out I had last fall was due to hormones I think. Whatever it was, it stopped as suddenly as it started.
I used BioSil for a while. It did not grow more hair. That was not expected anyway. It did make my fingernails and toenails grow faster and stronger. It might have made my hair strands thicker; but I want more, more, more.
