Went to wal mart yesterday and this lady in front of me (around mid late 50s) with a little kid in her cart was buying the follwoing: Little debbie cakes, cheap cookies, 2 X 12 packs of soda, a bunch of frozen junk meals, balogna, hot dogs and a tomato. She pulls out a food stamp card to pay for the stuff.
I used to study what the person in front of me put on the conveyor belt, now I try not to look. Eyes forward, maybe smile at the little kid in front of me but try not to notice the grey-tinged skin and dark circles they may have under their eyes...

Hey, you gotta give credit for the tomato! Seriously, you can't just fault folks from Walmart for this, in every supermarket you see the same kinds of things. Back in the 'good ol' days', when I was growing up, my parents weren't 'health freaks' by any means, but I'm grateful to this day that, for whatever reasons, they had very little, if any, junk foods around the house. No sodas, frozen dinners, etc. People only know what they're taught while growing up, sometimes they see the 'big picture' and straighten up on their own as they reach adulthood, but unfortunately it's not that common.

i used to eat shocking food as teenager
i moved out of home at 16
i only drank soft drink ate chips (fries) often
smoked 16 cigs a day
when i was 18-19 i started to think of food as the building materials for the body.
Then i slowly changed the way i ate gave up smoking cut back drinking.
Ya wouldn't build a house from cardbord if ya wanted it to be functional for long time

I'm so happy that you made those important changes for your health, good for you that you 'got it'. I'm similar...gave up smoking over 25 years ago, and started to think about food for nourishment, not only for pleasure. Like the old expression 'you reap what you sow'.
Same here, hubby and I both gave up smoking the same day, 30 years ago, with the help of an LP record on how to give up smoking,( Hypnotic record) and it worked.
We have never been interested in soda pops coke or the like, found them too gassy, the only time I ever enjoyed a coke was if it had a scoop of icecream in it Float with Coke they used to call it years ago.
Good for you boots, finding a healthier way.
I sat down at a table occupied by four male co-workers during a break at work last week. They were talking about food. Every one of them mentioned cooking or reheating food in a microwave. One looked at me and asked how long I cooked a certain food item in a microwave. I responded that I don't have a microwave. Every jaw went slack, then they all chorused, "You don't own a microwave?!" It was beyond their comprehension.

I don't have one, no need! The people of wal mart have them because they all buy those microwavable foods.
I had an EMF professional here a couple weeks ago. When he turned on the microwave his device registered super high numbers. He said you should stand in another room when using the microwave to avoid EMFs. I use the microwave to warm up my flaxseed heaters when I get chilly. Nothing else.

As a chemist my issue is localized heating. If you cook or warm up a pice of meat, you have these microareas on the food that see extremely high temps producing compunds that are not natural. Personally (my opinion only) I do not use microwaves, except at work to heat up water for tea.
Microwaves definitely produce a strange smell and taste. I don't trust them.
On the odd occasion I find myself unable to avoid going into a supermarket, I am usually shocked by the non-food food that people buy - and the expense of it! I've seen someone spend 100 on a pile of absolute crap with no nutritional value at all. If I cut down to the absolute essentials I could probably eat quite healthily on about 10 a week. And once I have a garden to grow my veg...
I often look to see what other shoppers are buying, out of idle curiosity. It seems to me the people with children tend to buy the least amount of real food. Shocking!
I firmly believe that the obesity "epidemic" is largely related to malnutrition. The body craves nutrition, but many people fill the void with junk food which contains little, if any, nutrition. Therefore, these people are never satiated because the body is constantly crying out for nutrition. They could consume twenty pounds worth of junk food in a day, and still feel the need to keep eating.
