Coffee is an infusion of ground, roasted coffee beans and is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. The drink contains more than a thousand different components, including carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals, alkaloids, phenols, and nitrogenous compounds. Overall, there is little evidence of health risks and some evidence of health benefits for adults consuming moderate amounts of coffee (3-4 cups/day, providing 300-400 mg/day of caffeine).
Beneficial effects on mental state, along with coffee's aroma and flavor, are likely reasons why coffee is such a popular beverage. Because of the many variations in the manner in which coffee is prepared and consumed, it is difficult to interpret epidemiological studies.
I had laid off of coffee for a little more than a year; because my ex-ND wanted me to bring my diet to a more alkaline state. It wasn't easy to wean myself from that. I've started back with mild coffee (Kona); and really enjoy it.
Huh-oh. From the article:
"Boiled coffee beans also contain significant amounts of the two diterpenes (a class of compounds with four isoprene units), cafestol and kahweol. Some studies have associated these compounds with increased levels of LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) and total cholesterol. Filtered coffee, on the other hand, contains very low levels of cafestol and kahweol because they are mostly removed by the paper filter during brewing. Indeed, filtered coffee consumption does not appear to elevate serum cholesterol concentrations."
I've been using a French press for my coffee or a gold filter for my maker; when using the maker. I guess I should switch to paper. Darn. However, for the year without coffee, my LDL was still slightly elavated. Need more exercise I guess.
Coffee seems as controversial as eggs. Yes. No. Yes. No. ...
Harry, I saw the Mount Hagen you recommended on sale, so I picked some up... I can understand why you like it! veryyyy smootth.
I have been using it in a new way. I now have coffee yogurt (because I just do not drink enough coffee ). I mix a tsp Mount Hagen with a tsp water, and add it to my yogurt. sweeten and eat. yum yum yum!!! If you add a little vanilla, too, that's good.
yes, lately I've been drinking a little more coffee. everytime I read one of pinballdoctor's posts.. I get a craving for coffee.
I'm glad you like it. That's pretty much the only coffee I drink.
My taste fluctuates, in terms of adding a sweetener or not. Sometimes I add some stevia. Other times, I prefer it unsweetened.
My wife likes flavored coffees - like vanilla nut, hazelnut. etc. But, I just prefer it with a touch of half-and-half.
What brand of yogurt do you like best? I recently tried the Horizon Organics Whole Milk Yogurt (cream-on-top). Very smooth and creamy. Taste-wise, I think I like it better than the other brands I've tasted.

Oh my, what a world of difference! Coffee is heaven - not just a coffee flavoured drink!
You can use the pods marketed by Senseo, but I bought a re-usable pod which I fill with whatever ground coffee I want. My favourites are Columbia, Kenya peaberry, Costa Rica. Making coffee this way is such a world of difference in taste! I can't recommend it highly enough.
So I am drinking more coffee in the past couple of weeks.
I see there is a much more expensive and comprehensive drinks maker called Tassimo, but you can use only the coffee that they sell. The coffee containers (pods?) are designed so that ONLY the Tassimo pods fit that machine. Sneaky!
Xania.. you stinker. telling me how good this machine is. coffee toys... they are as tempting as new exercise toys.
My husband told me about this.. and I was eyeing this (not that I need a new way to make coffee )... but when I saw that you could only use their pods.. I decided against it.. hoping that they would come up with something where you could use your own coffee.
Can't you get the Senseo make - I was able to get a little thingy to use with my own coffee? I will try to find you one.
Sorry for being a stinker - not much!!
Scorpiotiger - look at this thing. It's on UK Ebay, but there must be something similar in US? I paid 10 for mine, thereby saving about 25 ($50) so it's really an economically sound thing to do! Husband will praise your financial acumen.

Habitual coffee drinking has been associated with a reduced risk of mortality and chronic diseases, including cancer. The favourable influence of coffee is supported by several plausible mechanisms due to the presence of a variety of biological compounds such as caffeine, diterpenes, caffeic acid, polyphenols as well as volatile aroma and heterocyclic substances. Current evidence suggests that coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of liver, kidney, and to a lesser extent, premenopausal breast and colorectal cancers, while it is unrelated to prostate, pancreas and ovary cancers. Coffee drinking may still help reduce death due to liver cancer.
Thats all good news about coffee! I'm not sure now if its because I've gone back to drinking 1/2 regular mixed with 1/2 decaf thats helped my premenopausal breats aches, or because the iodine and l carnitine supplements are working so well. All I know is that my breast is NOT aching anymore. YES!
