Things You Dont Know About Pet Nutrition
Want to know how to help your pet live a long, healthful life? In an exclusive interview, "Live with Dr. Lisa Newman," Lisa Newman, N.D. and PhD, explains why commercial pet food and conventional veterinary care may actually be cutting your pet's life short.
Just as we see in people, the pet population is succumbing to increasing degenerative disease. But it's no coincidence: We're feeding our pets many of the same disease-causing ingredients that are used in the junk foods people eat. Check out the label on your pet's food or treats. You'll probably find it contains white rice or corn (refined grains) and salt, and sometimes even sugar or corn syrup. These are the same processed food ingredients that contribute to diabetes, hypertension and cancer in people.
But this is only the beginning of the story. When you start to really research how commercial pet foods are made, the ingredients list becomes truly horrifying. Did you know that recycled shoe leather is an acceptable ingredient? Even euthanized dogs and cats are "acceptable" ingredients in pet food.
I recently had an opportunity to interview Dr. Newman, a pet nutrition expert who is also the owner of Azmira Holistic Animal Care. She gave me an insider's view of what really goes on in the pet food industry, and she told me why pets are more diseased than ever. Dr. Newman also explained how to protect your pet with quality products and natural therapies.

In this fascinating interview, Dr. Newman shares vital information such as: - Why most commercial pet food supplements contain highly toxic ingredients
- Which foods you should never give your pets
- Why vegetarian pet food isn't a healthy alternative for your pet
- How monthly flea, tick and heartworm medications are contributing to canine lymphoma
- Why puppies and senior dogs need more vitamin C than adult dogs
- Which table scraps are good for dogs and which ones you shouldn't give them
- Why the number of dogs and cats with food allergies is rising
- Why supplements containing only one vitamin or mineral don't work well for pets
- Which ingredients help keep your pet's digestive tract clean and healthy
- How kelp promotes a healthy, shiny coat
- Why yucca is especially good for dogs
- How nutritious foods can add many healthy years to a pet's life
- Why pets need highly concentrated supplements
If you have pets, you will definitely want to read this interview with Dr. Newman. As a holistic pet health consultant, she has helped hundreds of animals overcome disease. In some cases, Dr. Newman has even healed animals who were so sick that their veterinarians recommended putting the animals to sleep.
In this interview, you'll learn how to start giving your pet the nutrition it needs to avoid disease and live a long, healthy life. You will also discover why you may want to give your dog or cat nutritional supplements, and how to know which ones are best.
These are just a few examples of the fascinating tips Dr. Newman shared with me. Want to learn more? Download "Live with Dr. Lisa Newman" right now and read it yourself:

Years ago, when I learned that cheap dog food was made from disgusting things like sickly pets that have been euthanized, and rendered together with many other horrible things, I stopped THAT day, got rid of all the food I had on hand, and started to buy more natural/organic products, and I read ALL labels now too!
Some pets were building an immunity to anesthetics and medications, due to all the left over meds they were consuming via dead animals I lost an otherwise healthy dog years back to cancer at the age of 8 yrs. old. I believe that feeding the cheaper foods had a lot to do with it

I met a Collie and owner the other day and I noticed many white spots on the dog's nose so I asked why.The owner told me the dog has lupus. That was a new one on me.
I always blame the dog food as a source of ill health but after reading the "infamous antivax" Dr. Carly's site I found the insert that comes with this brand of rabies vax:
Reference is "Compendium of Veterinary Products", Tenth Edition, Copyright 2007
Rabies Vaccine (produced by Pfizer)
Killed Virus
For use in dogs, cats, cattle and sheep only
Defensor 3
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Defensor 3 is for vaccination of healthy dogs, cats, cattle, and sheep 3 months of age or older as an aid in preventing rabies. The vaccine is prepared from cell-cultire-grown, chemically inactivated rabies virus which originated from Louis Pasteur's original isolate in 1882. The inactivated virus is formulated with a highly purified adjuvant and is packaged in liquid form.
DISEASE DESCRIPTION: Rabies is a worldwide, high mortality disease affecting mammalian species. Wild animals are common vectors of the disease and the major source of transmission to humans and domestic animals. Despite successful attempts over the years to reduce the incidence of rabies, recent published reports indicate that in the U.S. more than 30,000 people undergo treatment for possible exposure. Domestic animals are the major source of exposure for humans. Since 1980, the most commonly reported rabid domestic animals have been cats, cattle and dogs. In 1990, a total of 4881 cases of animal rabies were reported to the Centers for Disease Control by all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Susceptibility to rabies varies according to pet species. Rabies is not a treatable disease and suspect pets are usually quarantined until a clinical diagnosis is made, at which time they are destroyed.
The route of infection can be oral, respiratory, or parenteral. Following infection, a paralytic syndrome ensues, emerging as either the "furious" or "dumb" form. "Furious rabies" is characterized by unusual aggression; "dumb rabies" by lethargy and a desire to avoid contact. Respiratory failure is the immediate cause of death.
SAFETY AND EFFICACY: Because Defensor 3 is produced on an established cell line, it has safety advantages over inactivated brain-origin rabies vaccines. Tissue-origin vaccines contain extraneous protein in addition to rabies antigen that can lead to autoimmune disease.

So between the harmful pet food ingredients and the vaccine injury these animals are in the same sick boat that we are.

Thanks JayZee! I knew vaccinations were a problem, but I bring my "furkids" in for them when necessary. I'd feel terrible if they had contact with a rabid animal, or one with distemper, and died of that illness because they didn't have their shots. Where we live, they have exposure to raccoons, prairie dogs, squirrels, coyotes, etc.
Also, besides being required by the state, there's no getting around it if you travel about with your pets, as we have in the past, and will in the future.
My girl is suffering from seizures, including clusters, since last February. Believe me, I've read almost all there is to read online and at the library, and vaccinations are definitely a "red flag".

I've been using Nature's Recipe for my two dogs, who weigh 50-60 lbs. I add a 1/4 can of canned food like Canide for flavor. I also buy around 4-5 lbs of low fat ground beef when it on sale, fry it up, drain the fat, and store it in the fridge. So, for around a week, I'll use that to flavor the dry instead of canned. I also add a drizzle of olive oil to their meals.
I've read about the raw feeding, and it doesn't appeal to me. It isn't very convenient, and if they don't want to eat it right away, it sits somewhere and gets funky. Also, if you go on vacation, it's not very doable.
I just try to buy the better, higher quality brands. Something organic/holistic/natural. I refuse to feed cheap brands like Walmart's Ol' Roy or even Purina. Here's a rating list you might find interesting on my blog.
