Low Cost and Maintenance Alternative "Grass" Lawns
Anyone using any alternative groundcovers to take the place of regular grass in their lawns, either to save money on watering or to ease up on maintenance? Something for a dry area with poor soil, other than rocks, LOL.

For ground cover I use a lot of wood chips.
Then there are patio blocks or bricks. Next door neighbor has a brick driveway and walks that look real nice.
Of course you could always pave large areas in concrete or blacktop.
Or how about a wood deck?
Perhaps with a gazebo or a screened in porch.
What about a large fish pond?
For low maintenance rather then fish you could use quicksand. That way anything that might land on it would slowly disappear with no effort on your part.
Maybe a large outdoor �G� scale train layout.
And there is the ever popular redneck motif of 3 or 4 junked cars.
Thanks for the funny recommendations Mad Scientest! I was thinking of something that was living and growing, and made the air clean, like maybe clover. With two dogs, things like wood chips go all over the place and are brought inside the house along with the regular dirt. We have some old volcanic rock in the front, and when my dog runs out in the morning for the newspaper, they get kicked all over the cement walkway, driveway and sidewalk.
I think we should all be doing away with large areas of grass and cultivating that dirt for veggies and salads.
We shouldn't be using fuel (petrol or electricity) to cut grass which we then compost or throw away. If we grew our own salads and soft fruits we would save enormous amounts of energy and have better quality fresher produce picked and harvested just minutes before we use them. I'm reducing the amount of grass I have to maintain by increasing the amount of space devoted to growing my own food.
