Default Abnormal Pap - how much folic acid is safe?

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with an abnormal pap and my ob/gyn told me that I had high-risk HPV. He suggested that we 'wait and see'. Based on my own research, I've found a variety of natural remedies that have helped other women beat HPV which I'm trying now.

I've been taking 800mcg of folic acid (regular dose is 400 mcg I believe) but I've been reading about women taking up to 5mg of folic acid to cure HPV. I know that high doses of folic acid can also cause B12 deficiency. Is it safe to take such high doses of folate and if so, for how long can I take them? Should I add addition B12 as well?

Thanks!

Hi sweet_kiss, welcome to the forum. I'm happy to see that you're exploring natural ways to treat your condition. I'm no expert, but if it were me, I'd just take a vitamin B-50 complex twice a day.

The Now brand I'm using has 400mcg of folic acid and 50mcg of vitamin B-12 per capsule. I think that would give you the 800mcg and cover your B-12 needs. Here's an article about folic acid that says it's ok to go up to 1,000mcg, I personally probably wouldn't go over that amount:

Quote:
You can't get too much folic acid from foods that naturally contain it. But unless your doctor tells you otherwise, do not consume more than 1,000 mcg of folic acid a day. Consuming too much folic acid can hide signs that a person is lacking vitamin B12, which can cause nerve damage. Lacking vitamin B12 is rare among women of childbearing age. Plus, most prenatal vitamins also contain B12 to help women get all that they need. People at risk of not having enough vitamin B12 are mainly people 50 years and older and people who eat no animal products.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Do this for 3 months and you should be fine

1) 1000 mcg or more Vitamin B-12 once a week

2) 800 mcg folic acid daily

3) 10,000 Vitamin A (not beta carotene) daily

Just to say take it easy with the Vitamin A,dont exceed the dose and dont take it indefinitly bcuz it builds up in your system and over time it can become toxic...right saved? can you confirm?

You have come to the right person to slam conventyional western medicine.. Nope, there are like 5 cases a yr of vitamin A poisoning and they are usually mild. You need 5000 IU a day. 10000 is better. The only issue is vit a and d compete with the same receptors so taking large dose vut a can effectively reduce vit d levels. 10000 IU a day is no where near a toxic dose in the long run.

Think about it logically: If you take 10000 IU a day for a yr, no issues, if you double the dose of many statins, you chance of side effects is huge. In fact, I bet you personally know a person who has had side effects from lipitor.

Dr Rowan prescribes folic acid 5mg 3 x day a day for polyp disease. He doesn't even mention B12... but you can always take a liposomal B12 supplement, and this a fairly long term protocol to keep polyps from coming back. This was sent out in his newsletter. If there were a huge problem with it I doubt he'd send it out like that.

Ive done a fair amount of reading on folic acid and I haven't run into anything bad and a number of studies have included very high dosages, and im thinking 2 to 5 mg a day here.

Remember, these are theraputic dosages for disease issues. Once the disease is resolved stop. If the diseasae does not get better in a reasonable time stop. When weighing decisions on mega dosing vitamins you have to look at the disease, the risk involved, other treatments, duration of treatment etc

If I had HPV related to a bad pap smear I would be doing vaginal insufflation with ozone gas not folic acid.

read this site. Here are a couple of testimonials regarding cervical cancer and abnormal pap. Most cervica ca is caused by HPV as well as many abnormal Paps.
I took an ozone seminar and HPV was reported to be responsive to ozone.

sweet_kiss, you might want to read my HPV story under the thread "Douching after oral sex." I haven't managed to rid myself of the high-risk HPV yet, but I'm hoping! No one mentioned the ozone when I was asking about it in that other thread! I take 800 mcg folic acid and have for quite a while with no ill effects.

Ozone is a possibility as well as high blood levels of vitamin c.

For women vagianal insufflation of ozone gas and topical ozonated olive oil for both men and women.

Do not use ozone and vitamin c together as ozone will negate (oxidize) c. separate by several hours.

For reasons I do not know, the highest folic acid over the counter in the US is 800 mcg (0.8 mg), in some other countries it is 5 mg. Taking 5 mg a day you will have no issues. Higher doses are used as an antidote for a cancer drug called methotrexate.

400 mcg is 400 micrograms or 0.4 mg Recommended daily allowance. You should be taking at least twice that amount if you have an abnormal pap test. 300 mg I am sure that is not folic acid, look closely at the label, the 300 mg has to be something else.
