acid reflux in babies
My newest grandson has acid reflux. Cant keep the formula down... He is allergic to cows milk. Doctors said dont try goats milk, and mom isnt producing milk (possibly all the stress of the problems with this one) So she was forced to put him on formula.. He seems to be bringing quite alot of it back up.... Is there a natural remedy for acid reflux in one month olds???? Could this be a problem of not having enough acid in his stomach... and if so, would a tad bit of lemon juice in water help this problem.... what other remedies could we try before having to resort to the doctors remedies?

It may be reflux, but definitely not acid. I don't think babies have the capability to produce lots of acid. So I hope you don't even consider giving drugs like Nexium.
Try mixing in yogurt with the milk or formula. Even a quarter of a teaspoon can work wonders. My kids were raised on cow's milk (powdered) after and along with breastfeeding. A couple of them showed some signs of colic. But a dose of yogurt in the milk solved that, and the colic never recurred.

That was one of my first suggestions Gerry, but this is the grandson with TAR syndrome...Most TAR syndrome babies are allergic to cows milk, and he has proven to be allergic to it also... the doctors accidently put him on a supposedly non cow milk formula that actually had whey in it... He was throwing up so badly (newborn) that they were fixing to do a surgury on him to find out if he had a blockage.. and I read the ingredients to the formula, and told the nurses that the formula still had whey in it, and to switch the formula first....
So, can we get or make yogurt without cows milk??? I wonder if we can make a coconut milk yogurt??? Will check into that today.. thank you very much

Probiotics!
just me,
Doug Kaufmann at www.knowthecause.com says food allergies are caused from fungus, even in babies. If the mother has fungus, the baby could have fungus. If the baby was given antibiotics, he has fungus. Antibiotics are a fungal metabolite. Milk that is not from grassfed cows has antibiotics in it. Organic milk does not contain antibiotics, even so called organic milk that has been pasteurized is better than milk with antibiotics in it. All corn has fungus. Corn fed cows have fungus. Dairy from cows that have been fed corn, has fungus in it. Why can't he have goat's milk? He may not be allergic to organic cows milk. You don't need to put yogurt in the milk, just add liquid probiotics. A baby's stomach doesn't have much good bacteria in it early on, so just give him liquid probiotics. I bet there may be such a thing as organic baby formula. I know you don't want to give him soy milk. Hope this helps!

Well, what we're after in the yogurt is the lactobacilli.
If your grandson is that extremely sensitive to cow's milk, there are lactobacilli products in pill form. I wouldn't know how much cow's milk would still be in such preparations, though.
I took a quick look at Swanson's, and they do have several lactobacilli preparations that apparently do not have any cow's milk in the ingredients. Use the search function of the website for "acidophilus" or "lactobacilli" or "probiotics." Here's a couple you might consider:
Swanson Premium Brand Acidophilus
Nature's Way Primidophilus Bifidus (Adult)
There are lots of other choices. And you could find similar supplements in the health sections of groceries. Make sure to check the ingredients to avoid cow's milk or milk products (like whey).
Most are in capsules, so you can just open up the capsule to mix the contents into the baby's formula.

GERD!
just me,
I wanted to mention that when my son was a baby he had gerd really bad and projectile vomiting. I wish I had known about probiotics then. Since I have been taking four probiotics twice a day, and been on an antifungal diet, I no longer have gerd. The probiotics will protect the gut from yeast overgrowth. Anyway, I had my son xrayed for a blockage, and there was none! I wish I had not done this now. Also, when I was a baby I suffered from gerd and ended up in the hospital from dehydration. The doctor said the reason I had projectile vomiting was because the esophageal opening was not closing properly, but that it would in time. And it did! But even so, I think probiotics and organic milk would have stopped the vomiting! Make sure when you feed your grandson that he is in an upright position if possible, that will probably help.

Lots of times in a newborn the pyloric sphinctor does not work very well, causing vomiting. My son had the issue for a few days. They often out grow it.
Since he is allergic to dairy I guess you will have to go to soy but if his allergy is just eczema or nonlife threatening I would try goats milk. Try smaller meals.
The drug of choice often is reglan with increases GI motility. Not a great drug but you can't have them vomiting all the time There is risk of aspiration. Watch his weight closely.
You might want to consider a rice cereal. The weight of the food will help keep it down.
By far my very best advice on this is to take that baby to a homeopath. Not a nautropath. A homeopath. I bet they can fix it up in no time. Sometimes homeopaths can help with some of the symtoms of a lot of disorders. It will be luck, and hard to predict.
What is the nature of the allergy? Lots of kids that are allergic to cows milk are not allergic to goats milk so what are they basing this decision on? AH! Lactose intolerance!
TAR Syndrome (Thrombocytopenia with Absent radius) is a rare genetic disorder which is characterized by the absence of the radius bone in the forearm, and a dramatically reduced platelet count. Symptoms of thrombocytopenia, or a lowered platelet count, leads to bruising and potentially life-threatening haemorrhage.
Other common links between people with TAR seem to include heart problems, kidney problems, knee joint problems and frequently lactose intolerance.
Treatments range from platelet transfusions through to surgery aimed at 'normalizing' the appearance of the arm, which is much shorter and 'clubbed.' There is some controversy surrounding the role of surgery. The infant mortality rate has been curbed by new technology, including platelet transfusions, which can even be performed in utero. The critical period is the first year of life. For most people with TAR, platelet counts improve as they grow out of childhood.
So if he has a lactose intolerance it may be as simple as providing lactose digesting enzymes. But you should discuss this with an,, an,, I don't know what, a GI doc? Most of them are really stupid in my book. A doctor that knows a lot about this genetic disorder. Many genetic disorders are controlled by replacement therapies of various sorts.

Well one of our biggest problems, is the doctors down here are all new to this.. They are learning through our baby... I had written a post, and thought that it posted, only to find out that it didnt.... Mom took him to the pediatric doctor today... Doc says he does not have reflux, but that the vomiting is caused by the thrush...(I have never seen a baby in Texas not have thrush, wonder why??) So of course, the doc gave the normal typical.. dyflucan??? and something else, because the thrush is really apparently that bad. So again, I think we are leaning to the probiotics being the best solution for him... I have some kefir made out of raw cows milk...Correct me if Im wrong, but doesnt the fermenting during the kefir making process delete or use up the lactose???
Im not sure why the doctors are saying no to goats milk, probably because of the normal b.s. but on our end, I am having trouble finding any goats milk in this area at this time of the year... Still trying to find some, and when I do, I will try him on the goats milk... My grandson is going to be a learning process for all of us!!!
(typing while on the phone, so forgive mistakes please)

just me,
Thrush is fungus. Dyflucan is an antifungal, with side effects! Probiotics are a natural antifungal with no side effects. Lots of babies get thrush because their gut doesn't have enough good bacteria to fight off yeast overgrowth.
