Have had them in my calves and hamstrings (have not had a hamstring one in over a decade) but last night had one starting in my quads (thigh). Got up and walked around and stretched the leg, but that was odd and I could see whereit would be really painful if it progressed to a total cramp.
I do not know why, but that sounds amazingly painful.
It is, because it's such a thin area. It's happened several times, always at home so there was mag oil handy. Always when I was kneeling/squatting, cleaning or looking for something in lower cabinets, etc.
Sometimes I wake up with this. I have to get up and stand, or it feels like it is going to bend my foot inward.
Magnesium. Sometimes magnesium is not processed by the body. Too little stomach acid. Maybe too much calcium. Maybe the wrong form of magnesium, such as the popular mag oxide.
I like the magnesium oil. Mag chloride is really the best kind, but too slow acting when having a cramp. I want it over with immediately. As I said for me, standing and putting pressure on my foot is the best and final relief.

I don't try to 'walk out' or work the affected muscle at all anymore. I get best results with gentle massage with the oil, and complete relaxation of the area. Good to hear what kind of things work for others.
By the time I wake up with this, I am already in excruciating pain. So much so that all I want to do is get it over with. If I did use the mag oil, it would be over with by the time I walked to the bathroom to get the oil and use it. I mostly want to get back to sleep.
I have had both calf/leg & foot cramps in the past...so painful I sometimes screamed with pain!
Never in the daytime but always at night - every night!
A gal I'd met online told me it was a shortage of magnesium in my system.
I began taking a 400 or 500mg mag capsule morning & evening & have none since.
