There is no cure for herpes. Like shingles, it is a virus that will break out when a person is under extreme stress or weakened by illness, such as a case of flu. L-Lysine (amino acid) is helpful for keeping the virus in remission. If a woman with an active case of genital herpes gives birth vaginally, then yes, the virus could possibly be transmitted to the child. (Herpes can affect the eyes.) As long as your daughter's OB was aware of the situation, precautions would have been taken. During an outbreak of herpes, hand washing is very important. Cold sores on the lips, another manifestation of herpes, can cause transmission through kissing, sharing cups or spoons--through the saliva. Herpes can only be transmitted when a person has an active case of the virus. For most people, the virus is in remission for most of the time. There are a few unlucky people who have chronic outbreaks, but this is rare.
Herpes is common, one in five Americans has this virus. It does not kill people. I hope you aren't over doing the worry and causing your daughter undue distress.
