How much were you smoking before? I saw a lady in the grocery line buy cigarettes that rang up 6 dollars and I know some people do smoke a pack a day, so I just thought to myself $2,190 dollars a year.

A friend of mine quit by going to a store that sold cigarettes by the singles. He would only buy one when he felt like he needed to smoke and promised to only buy a single one. It was too much of a pain so many days to drive there when he had a craving that it became easier for him to quiet.

Congratulations on the 4 days and I hope you stick it out for the long run.

Do you normally have a drink with your cigarettes? Seems like when it's both habits, it's hard to break. A friend of mine grew up smoking and drinking together, so when he tried to quiet he was alright until people went out for a few drinks.

Thanks, I have been saying I was going to quit for a few months now, but I knew I was not right before vacation and I knew new years eve would be bad, so New yrs day was the choice. I was smoking a pack a day and a little more on the weekends.

Smokes go great with drinks, coffee, after dinner, after sex, drives, hot food, waking up.

Just a thought but think back to the very first time you had a cigarette. What was your reaction? Did you say gee this is great give me another one or was it something you just tolerated to be one of the guys?
If it was less then desirable experience then whenever you have the urge think back to that time and ask yourself do I really want to do this?

It's hard, saved! I stopped it 86 days ago and still crave it. The craving is overwhelming when I read this thread . But one thing is for sure, I will never smoke again, no matter what.

86 days, Have you noticed a difference in how you feel? Tonight I go have 2 beers, but I will leave ASAP if the urge gets too strong. That's great Matrix.

Mad Scientist: You are correct about one of the guys.

Good for you, Saved. Stick with it.

As someone who has never smoked I'm probably not the best person to give advice on this!, but for what it's worth, my take would be to think of the inevitable health improvements you'll make (Cigarette smoking is about the worst thing you can do re personal health). And giving up will increase your longevity.

If you smoke as an emotional outlet i.e. as a stress reliever, you're going to need something in the interim to take its place (Some form of candy?)
or you'll never hold out.

Good luck.

Hold on now Mad Scientist. Do you remember the very first time you had a beer? I did. But it "grew on me" real fast. So did cigarettes. Stopped more than 30 years ago. Never think about them after that, but occasionally I'd like a cigar or pipe when I smell them.

It grew on me really fast too. I even liked the smell of cigarette and cigar smoke from others when I was a child. Now the smell of cigarette smoke is bad to me, I'll avoid smoky areas. I think there may have been a few younger people who really did just tolerate though.

jbo I have noticed the price of cigaretts here are upwards of $20 a pack so I honestly don't know how people can afford it these days, when I was smoking 30 years ago they were only about $2 a pack of 20 which was what I smoked a day back then, I am so pleased I gave up.
Saved you are doing a good job keep it up, you will find that your sense of smell will be much better as well as taste,I can now tell if a person that walks past our house is a smoker or not and if a car is parked next to us at the lights I can actually smell if there is a person in the car that smokes, there is nothing worse than a person stinking of cigaretts.
Goodluck and I hope you succeed, for your healths sake.

No. But I do remember my first cup of black coffee and thinking people actually want to drink this stuff.
It looked more like chocolate milk by the time I had loaded it down with cream and sugar.
