Default GRAPHIC PIC: Should this young woman get stitches

Daughter *hashimoto's/gluten intol/gardacil victim - and I went for a lovely fall bike ride. And she fell on her handlebars - I believe that is what caused the puncture wound on upper leg.

The hand has "road rash" and I poured Iodine all over it. After thorough cleaning.

The puncture wound has NOT been touched. I say - E.R. - but she is worried about getting a tetanus booster. I say - we should go and tell them she is allergic to the tetanus?

In the top photo that wound will heal very well with a steri strip to close it. No sutures needed. Really, the only time sutures are needed is when muscle has been torn, or an artery.

Do a tag search for streri strips we have a good thread on them.

In the second photo that will heal also without sutures. It looks like skin has been taken off the top so there is nothing to pull together. I like tegraderm dressing for this which can also be purchased on line. Just a very tiny amount of neosporin or bacitracin onto the wound and coverd a tegraderm would be a good conventional treatment.

Personally i would use Dr Christophers Bone and tissue ointment and still cover with a tegraderm. I also might use some diluted lugols iodine.

Wounds that are kept moist will heal faster and better than those that dry out.

Neither of these wounds merit a visit to a doctor.

From the photo it doesn't look that bad, if it were me, I'd just go to a local drugstore and get those small 'butterfly closures' by Johnson and Johnson, you'll find them by the bandaids. If you tighten the skin together before putting them on, it kind of like a stitch at home, used it once on a bad cut on my finger.

Colloidal silver kills bacteria, speeds up healing, and helps prevent scaring.

I would use it topically on the wound, as well as on the dressing or band aid.

Hello - everyone - in a frantic moment I talked her into going to the ER (I did leave the final up to her - I supplied all the "what-ifs")

You all were correct! The wound in the top pic was caused from the over stretching of her skin while the blood was filling so quickly underneath the skin due to the landing on the grip of the handle bar while falling on the road. She did complain of intense burning there.(while the skin was stretching open?) No stitches were necessary.

Her hands were cleaned again (I just wasn't sure if there was road goo in the wound or not) and wrapped.

She did NOT get tetanus. (Allergies) Came away with scripts for antibiotic and ibuprofen which she cannot/will not get filled.

The silver is being used. As is arnica for pain-topical and oral remedies. Honey ointment topical-after topical iodine. COTTON only gauze, even tho all of it today at the usual stores is nylon/rayon/poly blends from china! poly? sheesh (She also increased her Vit C, D3 and oil of oregano) We don't have any Ledum 200C.

She cannot lift her right leg-at all. She decided to chance driving to work even tho. What a trooper.

As soon as the swelling goes down, she will try the butterfly closures, for that skin.

( It just shredded!! Never have I ever seen anything like that. Hope I never do again, too. )

Thanks soooo much everyone!

And a special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Angel on the bike path. We had just finished 10 miles and were at number 8-on the return- when she fell. We were 8 miles away from home (there was no way she could have walked it--no one to call to help. We were deciding whether to call for ambulance since she kept getting dizzy and leaning while standing up). These kind folks stopped to help -- put her chain back on - tried to get her steady on her feet, then decided to lock up their own bikes and get to their car to help us. Then another couple stopped to help us get her and our bikes onto the street to get the ride home.

Our bikes were loaded up on their bike carrier and these wonderful people drove us home. I have no idea what their names were. But I just needed to get a thank you "out there."

Just a quick follow up-dd decided to see her chiro to help with the stiffness and overall pain of the leg. The center of the injury was still swollen. He suggested some tumeric (which I had purchased) and to keep icing/rest/elevate.

Two days later at the next appt he claimed she had cellulitis. It was angry looking. Swollen, red, hot and painful. He suggested emergency care for an antibiotic.

I then took her to the ER she was originally seen at and upon the doctor seeing her injury she was hooked up to iv/antibiotics and admitted.

The next day a surgeon came to view the injury and said he would be taking her to OR in the early pm to remove and pack the area. This was on the 10th. She was on continued antibiotics thruout while taking nystatin and eating yogurt that I brought from home for her.

She was released with care instructions and Bactrim antibiotic.

Last evening at her recheck the surgeon said he was pleased with the site and she should continue caring for it. The doctor that saw her in the hospital had ordered a check on her blood work and found her platelets to be at 38,000. Wants the blood re-checked today.

We found a notice that Bactrim can cause a drop in platelets. She wants to increase some Vit C, and I am to find organic papaya leaf tea?? Before she has the blood re-drawn.

Wouldn't the doc suspect the antibiotic like we did?

Sorry to hear about your daughter and that this has gotten worse for you. I wish you both the best of luck. Unfortunately I am not really equipped to advice you on the best course of action but I look forward to what others have to say.

Praying for positive energy your way.

Thank you Chris Carlton67! The energy is helping. The injury site is healing very well. She increased her vit c for the platelets and will re-do the test. I am sure everything is all better, now.

She can't wait for the next "warmish" day to get back on that trail.

I have instructed her to never take her hands off the grips.
