I was on the bus and I saw an old 2-finger woman sitting and chewing. I noticed there was nothing in her mouth, not even gum or any substance. Why would she continue chewing with nothing in the mouth for the whole 25 minute bus ride? Muscle reflex? Retardation? I don't know.

Well, IDK. It could be anything.

It didn't look like it had anything to do with false teeth. This 2-finger woman really looked mentally disabled, and was smiling as well. She was chewing up and down and looking out the window, gets off the same stop every day. I am still trying to figure it out. Maybe I'll record her and show you.

I believe its just a reflex reaction... it happens with a lot of elderly folks that I worked with in the nursing homes... Even my dad in law did it....I dont believe that its a mental retardation problem.

I thought the mentally ill population was rapidly increasing.. especially in Starbucks and restaurants....

until I learned about those cell phones with hands free ear plugs



(these people are SO annoying.. because they are usually talking loud to NO ONE THERE... makes you appreciate those old women silently chewing their invisible gum on buses)

I don't mind answering people when they are talking in public on their cell phones. After all, it is public domain.

Once upon a time I walked out of a slightly bohemian clothing store. I was shopping with some friends. Actually I was keeping company with a husband who was "forced" into shopping with his wife. Anyway, the story goes that we walked out of the shop. Just outside the door this lady was holding up a strange hippie era skirt and telling someone on the other end of a cell phone conversation how lovely it was. I made a disapproving facial gesture and said, "not really". I meant it too. She informed me, loudly, how obnoxious I was in so many colorful words. Did not bother me. I deserve a few obnoxious moments in my "need to get out more" life.

Kevin, maybe you should follow jfh's example, and next time you think someone is asking for directions.. start giving them directions.

I've been tempted in restaurants to get up and sit down next to someone who is loudly (and rudely) talking on the phone.. and say, "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation... in fact, I had no choice.. but, since I have to listen to your conversation, I figured I might as well join in. I'll let you know when I want to talk, ok?"

This poor soul may be on medication for her mental illness. Sometimes people suffer side effects of meds if on high doses for a long time. However the risk of not being on the medication must be more miserable than the risk of the side effects.

I think it could be that she is on medication because she didnt look that well last time I saw her. But I think all knuckles are like this because I see alot of them doing this.
