Stop brain injury caused by Parkinson's and Alzheimer's
From Dr. Robert J. Rowen's "Second Opinion" e-newsletter 2/10/2012
As you may know, brain diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's grow progressively worse over time. The reason is due to ongoing brain injury. These diseases literally destroy your brain. But new research suggests a potent mineral can slow and even halt this destruction of your brain.
In one new study, researchers gave 41 people over 60 with mild cognitive impairment either lithium (150 mg daily) or a placebo. Those getting the lithium had significantly less decline over time than the controls.
Another study on mice found that lithium could prevent the brain injury that Parkinson's causes.
Doctors have long used the mineral lithium in high doses to treat manic depression. It has a narrow window of safety when used in the large amounts (300 mg daily). But the Alzheimer's blood level was about half the usual target level for manic depression. When it comes to a horrible disease like Alzheimer's, the risk is clearly outweighed by the benefit. I'd say the same for Parkinson's as well.
In smaller doses (1-2 mg daily), I like lithium as a brain protector. It's very safe in these doses.
But, if you have a neurodegenerative disease, please see an integrative physician for its possible use to protect your neurons. Pharma won't help you here. Lithium is not patentable, it's a mineral. So, we're just not going to see funded studies on the possible great benefits in neurological disorders. Don't use the higher doses on your own. Make sure a doctor supervises to avoid toxicity.
Thanks for this JanH. I was just reading something about Parkinson-ism yesterday, but can no longer find it. I worry about Parkinson's, because I know several elderly friends with it. One has died because of it.
I have had hand tremors, since the late 50s, as far back as I can remember them. I attribute it to an accident when I was an infant. My year old sister pushed my baby carriage down 3 steps, whereupon I landed on the top of my head on the soft spot. I can control them only if I focus really hard to calm my mind. This is inappropriate behavior, and I fuss at my brain for doing so. That hasn't helped. Perhaps I can find lithium and give it a try. Hoping is a worthless effort in my life for any reason, but I'm still hoping that this does not develop into something more sinister like Parkinson's.
I have read that if you live long enough, you will get Parkinson's.
BTW, lithium should also be good in bipolar cases.

Oh yes. Now I remember. Close your eyes Saved. Don't read this.
Smoking helps Parkinson's. "A new study adds to the previously reported evidence that cigarette smoking protects against Parkinson's disease. Specifically, the new research shows a temporal relationship between smoking and reduced risk of Parkinson's disease. That is, the protective effect wanes after smokers quit." https://www.data-yard.net/10v2/parkinson.htm

Lithium helps to some degree because it is antifungal.

Bipolar, like any other non man-made "disease", is a deficiency problem. Once the deficiency is addressed, the "cure" is started. On the other hand, if nothing is done to eliminate the deficiency, health problems will continue to get worse.

Smoking has been shown to constrict blood vessels, thereby decreasing blood flow, oxygenation, and nutrient supply to the cells. The smaller the blood vessel, the bigger the problem.
The question becomes "How can Parkinson's patients be helped by lowering blood flow to areas of the brain?" This is not possible, and I would suggest that all "treatments" have pros and cons, and you can't allow one "pro" to outweigh a hundred "cons".
I also have to wonder who paid for this "new study"..

Thanks for posting this! Now you have me googling lithium Lol
It's a mineral salt.. and the veggies with the highest lithium amounts are the nightshade vegetables. tomatoes, peppers, potatoes. Herbs, spring water, dairy..

ewww yah.. ick.. gag me!!
There's nothin' keener than an ex-smoker's nose radar LOL!!!
Last year or so, before I put the stomp on dating I had just started seeing a guy who actually lied about smoking. He asked me how I felt about smokers & I said whatever floats their boats, but I would never date someone who smoked.
So I'm out one day doing errands or something & I spot him across the street with smoke puffs around his head How long did he think he'd be able to hide that?! Ya know?? Obviously, if he went in for a smoochie, I'd be able to taste that ick. The killer was he had tickets to Jersey Boys LOL and I REALLY REALLY wanted to see it, but couldn't bring myself to use him (even though he was a liar) for his tickets.
Re the lithium.. guess I should have read your post first. Great link!!

I am just happy I do not even desire one at all. Even when I go on vacation, I will not say just one, or a cigar sounds nice etc. The smell is just bad.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and sporadic Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (sCJD) are sister prion diseases, transmissible, infectious by medical equipment, (scopes, etc.) dental and eye equipment, blood, urine, feces, saliva, mucous. Doctors frequently misdiagnose AD and sCJD one for the other. The symptoms and neuropathology are almost identical. www.alzheimers-prions.com As of 2012, Alzheimer's epidemic has over 6 million victims in US. October 2011: Dr. Claudio Soto, University of Texas Medical School, announced injecting Alzheimer's brain material into mice brains, causing infectious prion disease.
See Video - Dr. Soto on Alzheimer's disease and prions:
variant Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (vCJD) is caused by eating prion tainted beef. Many scientists believe sporadic CJD/aka Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is also caused by eating prion contaminated meat. Modern meat packing = 50 to 100 cows in each vat of hamburger. (how many infected "downers" ?) Jan. 2012: McDonald's stops using "pink slime" ( slaughterhouse floor wastes) in its burgers:
Dr. Murray Waldman, Toronto Coroner, author of Dying for a Hamburger = Modern Meat Processing and the Epidemic of Alzheimer's Disease, wrote" . . . one gram (about 1/30th of an ounce) of brain contains enough prions to infect well over one billion individuals "
