\r\n \r\n When I was diagnosed with Osteopenia, the doctor told me to increase my calcium supplement intake greatly. Instead of doing that I eventually eliminated my calcium through supplements, and made my intake come from foods only. I started using vitamin k2 and vitamin D3, along with exercise for bone health, and to avoid Osteoporosis.\r\n

This study doesnt appear to take into account the need for higher calcium in western diets to buffer the high acidic diets normally consumed. Calcium excretion also increases with increased stress levels we subject ourselves too.
\n
\nThere appears to be a lack of calcium and vitamin D in the northern hemisphere among middle aged and elderly which causes increases in parathyroid hormone(PTH) levels. PTH is only supposed to cut in to top up calcium levels intermittently(like an electrical thermostat). People who are continually drawing calcium out of their bones and have high levels of PTH develop Congestive Heart Failure(CHF) as high PTH levels damage heart cells. CHF patients treated with calcium and vitamin D have shown improvement.

Not sure I can see your logic wtih that first bit, dear Liverock. I think every single regular on NMT recognises that \'our\' highly acidic Western diet is at the root cause of all degenerative disease, from arthritis to cancer. The only "need" is for people to stop eating such a highly acidic diet!
\n
\nD and PTH are mentioned in the article, near the end and sub-section.\r\n

Knight,
\nThe need to stop eating a high acidic diet was not the point of the article.
\n
\nThe point of the article was that Western hemisphere countries would have less osteoporosis if they adopted the very low calcium intakes mostly prevalent in third world African countries.
\n
\nTheres no way that the Western processed food diet is going to change in any meaningful way in the near future and the author didnt appear to have considered that there would be the need of a higher calcium intake in the average Western diet to provide \'buffering\' against the acidity.
\n
\nIn these circumstances adopting a lowered calcium intake would mean drawing calcium from the bones, with raised PTH levels and eventual congestive heart failure as well as increased osteoporosis.
\n
\nThis is why I am not a fan of nutrient intake recommendations based on population studies because there are too many variables from one country to another.\r\n

I know it wasn\'t the point of the article, it was me who posted it.
\n
\nI wasn\'t contradicting the article, nor having a go at you, merely making a sweeping generalisation about the need for people to abandon the typical acidic diet which is the root cause of all forms of degenerative disease.\r\n

\r\n \r\n The change of life is a change in calcium metabolism
\n Regardless of any argument over whether calcium pills are problematic or not, the change of life among females signals a redirection of calcium metabolism.
\n I often ask groups of women to fill in the blank to this question: "As menopause sets in, women experience a shortage of _______?" Women often appear puzzled at this question. They don\'t know the obvious answer. Some will answer by saying calcium. But the onset of menopause doesn\'t cause women to suddenly reduce their intake of calcium en masse.
\n Menopause is a shortage of estrogen, not calcium. Pouring more calcium into a menopausal woman is like pouring calcium into a barrel with a hole in the bottom. This seems too obvious.
\n
\n Estrogen sends a signal for calcium to be held in bones. Without that signal, calcium slowly exits bone and is deposited in arteries. The risk for heart disease rises by 360% with the onset of menopause. Calcium released from bone is deposited in arteries, which causes loss of elasticity, inability to control blood pressure, and eventual blood clots or calcium plaque that can block a coronary artery that feeds the heart oxygen. This arterial blockage is called a heart attack.
\n Strangely, modern medicine acts as if it is baffled and dumbfounded when it is commonly reported that arteries calcify at a rate that correlates with loss of calcium from bone. This is called the "calcification paradox." There is no paradox, except in the minds of ill-informed physicians. \r\n \r\n

\r\n \r\n Quote From The Bill Sardi Article:
\n
\nEstrogen sends a signal for calcium to be held in bones.
\n
\nWhere in the Hell did that come from? Estrogen sends a signal to where? and why would estrogen send such a signal??
\n
\nThis whole calcium thing is wrong. Just about every doctor, nutritionist, and other so-called health experts have it all wrong.
\n
\nFirst, lets go over the symptoms of calcium deficiency...I mean the real symptoms. They include:
\n
\nOsteoperosis
\nGingivitis
\nReceeding gums
\nArthritis (all kinds)
\nBell\'s Palsy
\nHypertension
\nKidney Stones
\nBone Spurs
\nHeel Spurs
\nCalcium Deposits
\nPMS Symptoms
\nCramps and Twitches
\nLow Back Pain
\nOver 100 Other Calcium Deficiency Conditions..
\n
\nNow for some facts:
\n
\nCalcium is regulated by Magnesium, therefore should be taken on a 1:1 ratio, and as you age into your 40\'s and 50\'s, the magnesium should be increased to a 2:1 ratio.
\n
\nMost mineral supplements are metallic, which are basically ground-up rocks. These include oyster shell, eggshell, limestone, calcium carbonate, all types of clay, seabed minerals, tums, etc..
\n
\nThe body was not designed to absorb ground-up rocks, thus will only absorb 10% at most.
\nEXAMPLE: Lets take calcium lactate,a common calcium supplement used by many manufacturers. Lets say you take 1000 mg of this per day. Now of that 1000mg, only 250mg is metallic calcium, while the other 750mg is sugar or lactose. And since this is elemental calcium, only about 10% will be absorbed, or only about 25mg. So if you are age 40 or older, you will only absorb about half of this 25mg, or 12mg, which isn\'t enough to be beneficial. You think you\'re getting 1000mg, but in reality you are absorbing 12mg..
\n
\nYou can take all the calcium you want, however, without adequate vitamin D, you can\'t absorb it. That is why calcium ends up in the soft tissue, such as brain and arteries. Your bones are starving for calcium, but since it can\'t be absorbed, it ends up coating the arteries and forming plaque in the brain. Now consider 80% of the population is deficient in D3.
\n
\nWe also know that other minerals, such as zinc, copper, boron, and silica play a role in bone health, so being deficient in any of these trace minerals will also have negative health effects.
\n
\nTaking more calcium than magnesium will lead to magnesium deficiency, which will cause another 100 or so health conditions, including heart attack and stroke.
\n
\nReceeding gums is nothing more than osteoperosis in the mouth.
\n
\nIn order to reverse all of the conditions listed above, you must supplement with calcium (from citrate if you are using elemental/metallic form of calcium) to the tune of Three Times the RDA.
\n
\nColloidal minerals are the best form for the body to absorb. (98% as opposed to 10% metallic form)
\n
\nMany elderly end up with broken bones. It was assumed that they fell down and broke a hip, however, most break a hip, which causes the fall. And of these, about half will never recover.
\n
\nOn a final note, milk is a poor source of calcium. It is very confusing because although calcium is available, the casein in the milk will not allow the body to absorb it..The countries that consume the most milk also have the highest amount of osteoperosis.\r\n

\nIt struck me as odd that the author believed the occasional piece of fish or some other food would give you plenty of vitamin D. Seems to ignore the massive amount our bodies can make when exposed to sunlight.
\n
\nThat Sardi comment struck me a little odd as I thought about it later. Found another Sardi article damning copper for Alzheimers.\r\n
