My girl has some serious sinus drainage. Im not sure if this is an automatic thing for mental retardation (which is her diagnosis) or if I am doing something wrong... She is on as good as a diet as I can afford... no processed carbs, no sugar. She doesnt drink any types of soda or junk liquids... She normally drinks water, or herbal tea. Occasionally, she will drink fruit juice, but not too often and none with added ingredients, because she is carb sensitive, carbs put her to sleep.. Her main foods are veggies, fruit and meat.. usually turkey, chicken or fish and then occasionally ground chuck... We also have lamb and goat in the freezer that is eaten occasionally.. It appears that she might be allergic to corn, eggs, milk, and wheat... eating these things alot or on a daily basis will cause her to have seizures... so I try to keep these out of her diet... Occasionally I will put milk in her meal, or give her some eggs... Or if a recipe calls for one of these items, I dont delete the item, but wont let her eat that meal again the next day. She is on two seizure meds... depakote and tegretol, but no other meds. The soap and shampoo we use is homemade goats milk soap... dont use perfume or scented cleaners... Cleaning products are vinegar, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide... We even brush our teeth with baking soda... She recently had a scope done on her throat, and we discovered that she has an hiatel hernia, but nothing serious enough to require surgury... all we were told to do, was to raise her bed up at night when she is sleeping, and to make sure she doesnt eat anything for two hours before she goes to bed. Ok, so what am I missing.... am I doing something wrong??? The doctor wants her to start using nasonex...which is a steroid... not something I really want to do, but unless I have an alternative plan, I have no other choice... According to the doctor, the steroid will dry her up.... Is there something natural that will do the same thing.... I noticed Harry had the article about ginger being used in place of steroids for heart problems... would it help with sinus drainage. Normally, we use quercitin as an allergy reliever in the summer time, but I try not to use it year round, and not really sure if it was clearing up the sinus, or just stopped the allergy sneezing, and just plain feeling bad. Is it safe to use quercitin all year long? Anyone have any suggestions?

I am going to use Nasonex for just a short while. It is a corticosteroid, unlike anabolics. I'm just going to do this while I work on my adrenals and thyroid. I haven't researched well enough to know if the Nasonex will defeat my adrenal work yet. Weakness in those glands can cause problems with sinus (and very much other stuff); such as allergies, infections, swelling, etc. Weak adrenals can cause allergies.
Adrenals need a lot of vitamin C when they are weak or stressed. The body will give them priority for the use of vitamin C. Also the adrenals need pantothenic acid (lots of this in bee pollen). I'm using nettle leaf powder, yucca powder, schisandra, and licorice root powder for the adrenals adrenals. I'm also using ashwagandha for the adrenals and thyroid. Seaweed is good for balancing the whole endocrine system.
I use amla and watercress for vitamin C. Not that synthetic ascorbic acid. Watercress has a lot of quercitin too. It is so much better to use whole herbs; instead of extracts. Plants know how to balance things. Seaweed, for example, has mercury; but it also has iodine to render the mercury unusable to our bodies.
Check to see if those 2 meds are causing problems for the adrenals or thyroid. She probably won't have a choice for getting rid of the drugs; but you can help by providing nutrients for her glands.

A simple and inexpensive solution that may help is a nasal sea salt rinse. Here's part of a message about its use.

Healing Remedies with Sea Salt
Sinusitis
Chronic sinusitis refers to inflammation of the sinuses that
continues for weeks, months, or even years. Allergies are the most
common cause of chronic sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis can persist even
after antibiotics are given. It's the most frequently reported
chronic disease.
Acute sinusitis occurs when bacteria invade the sinus cavities and
impair proper drainage of mucus from the sinuses to the nose. Chronic
inflammation of the nasal passages or rhinitis also can lead to
sinusitis. Allergic rhinitis or hay fever is the most common cause of
chronic sinusitis and is a frequent cause of acute sinusitis.
The common cold is the most prevalent predisposing factor to
sinusitis. Acute sinusitis typically causes symptoms of nasal
congestion and a thick yellow or green discharge. Other symptoms
include tenderness and pain over the sinuses, frontal headaches, and
sometimes chills, fever, and pressure in the area of the sinuses.
Entering bacteria gets trapped and filtered out by mucus and minute
nasal hairs called cilia. This air-flow system can sometimes slow
down when something impedes the cilia, if a cold clogs the sinus
openings, or if an allergen swells the sinus linings. Then air gets
trapped, pressure builds, the mucus stagnates, and bacteria breed.
Infection sets in and you have sinusitis. When you get clogged up,
you may end up with a permanent thickening of the sinus membranes and
chronic congestion.
Sinus Wash
Flush out nasal secretions. Mix 1 teaspoon of non-iodized salt or sea
salt with 2 cups of warm water and a pinch of baking soda. Pour it
into a shot glass, tilt your head back, close one nostril with your
thumb, and sniff the solution with the open nostril. Then blow your
nose gently. Repeat on the other side.
An Ayurvedic solution, similar to this is done in the same manner
with a Netti Pot. It looks similar to a tea pot, but with a longer,
narrower spout for the nostrils. These can be found in most health
food stores.
A cup or handful of water in your hand or neti pot is a wonderful
cleansing therapy. Slowly inhale the salt water into your nose to
cleanse your sinus and open up the air passages. Over the counter
nasal washes (not nasal sprays) are available. The simplest form is a
non iodized salt water spray.
A few visits to a constitutional homeoapth may help her to get past those allergies.
Congestion can lead to infection so watch out for that. I suspect that those allergies may be caused by gut issues, leaky gut. Those protiens seep though when they shouldn't.
I am not adverse to ascorbic acid in pill form. Its what all the studies have been done with. 2 to 3 grams a day might be helpful if she is old enought to swallow pills.
You might try uping the quercetin to 500 mg 2 x day before you try a steroid. And the nasal flushes with a neti pot might be of some help if you can get her to do it.

thanks for all the suggestions... I hadnt thought about the concept of her having adrenal problems, but it is definitly something to look into... Her meds do alot of other crap to her, i wont be surprised if they are causing problems there too... I did realize over the holidays... due to our pharmacy being closed sooner then I thought it would be... that the depakote is the main reason for her teeth grinding... she missed two doses and her teeth grinding was almost nonexsistent for that one day...ahhhh what a relief!!!! I can up the quercitin and i get the vitamin c that we can scoop into foods, so we can be more prudent on giving her that.... I had thought about the nasal wash, but Im not sure if that would work... I would need her cooperation and with her level of retardation, I dont get cooperation... she cant swallow pills everything has to be crushed...would the sea salt in a nasal spray help???Im sure i can get an empty nasonex spray bottle and go that route. or could i use the nebulizer with the sea salt????? lyechin... I have had her at the doctors.. they were the ones who want me to use the nasonex... but doctors wont accept the fact that meds on her dont do well... they usually do the exact opposite of what they want it to do.... last time she was in the hospital for pnuemonia.. they insisted on giving her breathing treatments with abueterol (sp) kept getting upset that we couldnt keep her awake enough for the treatment to do any good, and refused to believe that it was the treatment that was knocking her out... abueterol instead of hyping her up, knocks her out so far, that you would think she was in a coma... We try very hard to keep her off of meds... yes we will give her what she needs, but if we can find a better solution then we will go with that, instead of allowing the meds to make her worse.... again thanks for all the suggestions... we will be working on it!
