Default Primary care and natural practitioners

Hi all,

Just wondering where everyone gets their primary care or natural medicine information. Any experiences with holistic doctors, nurses, herbalists, naturopaths, and the like? I'm wary of reps for specific companies because they always seem to find plenty of supplements for every person, regardless of circumstances. Who to go to for good, honest information? Or do you just educate yourselves online or with books?

Love and peace,
Karin

I'm sure everyone here will have a different story to tell on how they get their info and make their health decisions.

I have worked for chiropractors that practice nutritional and alternative health education and guidance, as a massage therapist, as a colon therapist, have spent times at wholistic health retreats, taken courses, searched the internet on websites and forums, work as a nurse, care for a family wholistically, read more books than I can remember, have met challenges personally with cancer, arthritis, insomnia, and currently psoriasis through different modalities. I have spend probably too much money on various types of equipment and have experimented on my self as well as willing and curious victims I have subjected myself to a multitude of austerities in health regimen over the years. I have consulted naturopaths, homeopaths and medical doctors who specialize in alternative medicine as well as various assundered off the wall alternative practitioners, and in general done much to educate myself and consequently have been able to overcome much for myself and for my family over the last 30 years. I have taught classes, counseled those who seek such advice and have generally given away my services and time for free in this area.

I think its much easier to learn about what we discuss here on the forum these days. So much more knowledge easily accessible.
Thats how I do it. Anyone else?

I wish there were some alternative healthcare providers in this area. I do use a chiropractor once in a while and also was helped by a reflexologist a few years back. I shouldn't admit this but I'm basically my own doctor. I feel I'm very aware of how I'm feeling and I suppose if something were really out of whack I'd go to a medical doctor. I do take advantage of getting a 32 panel blood drawing done every other year and have also had the "scans" done a couple of times. I see the prescriptions that my friends get when they go for their checkups and it just makes me feel sad for them. My best friend did the Lamasil treatment for toe nail fungus back to back 3 times. What do you suppose her liver looks like? (She still has the fungus). I love to read so I have many interesting health books on various subjects, I like this forum and generally looking things up on the net!

Hi Marilyn!

I'm a lot like you, and I'm proud to admit that I'm basically my own doctor, more power to us!!

I have medical coverage, and only go to a doctor when necessary. I'm in my mid-fifties, and am not yet on any prescription meds, although high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes and cancer is in my family.

I take lot of vitamins and supplements, and keep alert for any positive natural alternatives to either avoid or treat problems, so far so good!!

I've had several bouts with the toe nail fungus and won, without prescription pills from a doctor

That's a good question. I'm a "convert" from the land of "conventional" drugs-and-surgery healthcare. Several years ago, after a stroke and heart attack and an ever-growing pile of prescription medications left me with no energy and a pretty lousy quality of life, I took it upon myself to find the answers to honestly improving my health.

I've pretty much educated myself by researching and studying mass quantities of health information, both online and in books. I found that there was a dire need for basic health improvement information for the average person (layman) about how the body works and what the basic elements are that the body requires for good health.

I decided to create a website for the purpose of helping others learn the basics and that improving health can be simple. I've personally found that it is simple when you know the basics because I've applied what I've learned to myself and am regaining my health at a nice pace.

I continue my study and research on the Web primarily. I also have a new doctor, who is a D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy) and a physical therapist who both help me with my endless questions!

Sincerely,
BB

Im also basically my own doctor. I agree that in todays day there is so much information and test applications easily available for us to take our own health concerns into our own hands - more so then doctors who just dont have the time to research databases for alternatives methods.

Not everyone has the ability to be their own doctor as it takes time, dictation, knowledge and can be proven to be expensive by trail and error but for me it has been well worth it. I have health insurance but don't access it - it's more there for just in case of a dire emergency.

I'm 47 and haven't been to a doctor in years. For my own knowledge I participate in alternative natural care seminars, I take a combination of supplements (vitamins, herbs, holistic, Ayurveda, est.), I try to work out on a daily basis and I consciously think of the healthier choice in selection when eating.

Im not obsessed about it but this has more become a natural way of life for me now - if not I would be in a wheelchair near deaths door today.

Alternative health care heals the mind, body and soul not just the illness - that makes a big difference in overall wellness.

Thanks for the responses! I'm impressed at how many people pretty much manage their health on their own. Sometimes all the choices and information seem overwhelming to me, especially when I read that supplements or other natural remedies may have downsides too, like contaminants, that I would have no idea about. I've read so many books but still feel like I don't know enough! I would love a good natural doctor that I could really trust, who I knew was very smart and wasn't just trying to sell me their products, if only to bounce off my ideas on and steer me in the right direction.

Would you all visit a doctor more often if they were really knowledgeable and trustworthy, or do you prefer doing it on your own? Any tips on how to find someone good?

Hi Karin,

Im not sure what kind of doctors you are asking about but in either case it should be someone you can bond with as it builds a sense of trust.

I reference assistance in the natural health field such as a wonderful herbiest. I always look forward to seeing him as we share in our knowledge of natural healing. I come away with more of an education after seeing him rather then an ordinary doctor prescribed visit.

Hi Karin,

I took charge of my own health several years ago, while I had a doctor that wasn't helping me at all. Last year, due to a change of insurance, I was able to find a new doctor, who is a D.O. - Doctor of Osteopathy.
Here's a definition: DO (Doctor of Osteopathy)A Doctor of Osteopathy is also a licensed physician, able to perform surgery and prescribe medicine. DOs practice a whole person approach to medicineplacing a greater emphasis on understanding the relationship between the organs, muscles, nerves, tissues, bones and tendonsand focus on preventive health care.
I have several medical issues and finding him has been a miracle. I currently require a few prescriptions for a heart condition, but he not only has me going to a physical therapist for heart rehabilitation, he does not overprescribe and focuses on really helping me with diet and exercise and good supplements (like cod liver oil!)

He respects my intelligence and my ability to think for myself, doesn't ridicule me if I disagree with him, spends 45 minutes a week with me because that's what I need! and is truly "on my team."

I found him by doing a search on the Web for naturopathic/holistic doctor in my city. I feel like I majorly lucked out!

Best wishes to you,
BB

Wow, 45 minutes for one visit!! That is exceptional. About the cod liver oil---Dr. Mercola no longer recommends CLO because of the high vitamin A content. To get adequate vit D you get way too much A. Just wondering if you were aware of that...? Also, everyone doesn't always agree with Dr. M. Any comments?

Hi Marilyn,

I know that my doctor prescribed it for its benefits to heart health. The thing that I'm aware of about Vitamin A is that people with diabetes (like me) don't synthesize from carotene.

I just found this in support of that:

"Other researchers have found that the diabetic is unable to convert carotene into vitamin A. It is advisable therefore for the diabetic to ingest at least the recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A from a non-carotene source such as fish-liver oil. Diabetics and others on low-fat diets often need supplemental amounts of this fat-soluble nutrient."

From https://chinese-school.netfirms.com/C...utritions.html

Other than that, I have only good information and experience with it... I use Carlson brand, it rocks! Doesn't taste "fishy" at all and apparently is very purely obtained. I actually enjoy taking it. I got another kind first and I had to hold my breath and follow it with a shot of Emergen-C so I wouldn't gag!

I think Dr. Mercola has some very good information, but I don't agree with everything he says.

Cheers,
BB

I think it is important to have a good doctor. When I got the lumps on my thyroid back when my doctor was a great help to figure out what it was....then she was supportive of me doing iodine. I also go to her for yearly well woman check ups and she checks my hormones, vitamin levels and reminds me to to take all those dam pills I choke down daily. If things go wrong its at least really important to have someone help you make a diagnosis, then you can decide how to proceed from there. I found her by asking around at the local health food stores for a doctor who does complimentary medicine.
