The clay pellets sound awesome if they won't harbor mold. I've been using hydrogen peroxide when I water my plants but I still notice a musty smell after I water them and I don't like that at all. I actually want to have an indoor mini garden but couldn't get past the idea mold could be a problem but I'm going to look more into hydroponics. I need something simple and low maintenance. I can't bring myself to get a fancy watering system when I could just water them myself but a light would be needed I'm sure. A new project to look into. Very cool. As a matter of fact, I wonder if I could grow some sunflower seed sprouts in clay....hmmmm....back on topic. Air purification. I'm getting closer to buying the ozone and need to find out if the asbestos in my vents are going to be a problem. There's always something it seems. Thanks everyone!

Asbestos in your vents? how old is your house?

Most applicatons of asbestos are not hazardous as long as they are solid, and not blowing around. Often the risk of removing it is greater than keeping it... so consider that... it takes a hazmat trained team for removal which costs big bucks.

Best to have a nonbiased professional assess the situation... and that means NOT someone selling a removal service.

I live in Florida where the humidity is high and I've only need mold spurs in soil, never in clay pellets. I think it's another reason to use clay pellets and not soil in your house. Maybe once a year though I do clean out the pot and I take the clay pellets and bowl them and then reuse them.
I just don't think dirt/soil should be in a house. Clay pellets are just so much easier to take care of, cleaner and long term it's cheaper. I don't have any special kits at all, I just use clear glasses for vases that I can see where the water level is, but water stays in the pellets much longer than soil, so you don't water it as often and you can actually go on vacation for a month or two and your plants will be fine.

Here's the video I saw a few years ago on how to grow your own fresh air from Ted

Arrowwind09,
A couple weeks ago I hired an AC guy to come out to take a look at this mysterious white dust that is collecting near my inlet duct. I've NEVER ever had this in my home before and it made my heart sink to see it. (I'm thinking it's from Fukushima). He had no idea what it was and was of no help. I asked him if we was concerned about Fukushima radiation and he said, "not at all." Typical. He was the one who looked into my ducts and said it had asbestos and advised never to have them cleaned out. To get a really good air purifying system with new ducts and a foot thick filter would be about $40 grand. I will move into a newer home before we get our ducts replaced. Our home was built in 78. We probably have radon issues too. Good grief!

JBO,
That video was the one that inspired me to use the plants. I bought mostly snake plants and dracaneas because they're pretty low maintenance. Your hydroponics reminded me of the 5 bamboo plants I have in clear glass containers, marbles and water. It's so easy and I love how they are mold free. Not all plants can live hydroponically though, right? I'll have to look into that.

Got to buy my ozone machine now. Have a good day guys!

I've heard really large plants that take up half the room have issues if they don't have soil, but I've honestly only have a few plants throughout the house. One thing that isn't that great for air quality is pets and I can't help it, I love dogs and have a dog that I know many of these plants are horrible for them, so I actually have less plants then I would like.
I feel the air quality in my bedroom is probably the most important, I do have a few snake planets there and keep them high up on shelves. I have a few rubber planets around my house high up as well, but those are harder to take care of for me compared to the snake plants. I can forgot to water the snake planet for over a month and it comes right back to life.

mommysunshine.... best to leave those ducts alone... but when you get your ozonator you can put it by an air intake and let it run there for several days. that should kill any molds etc that might be growing in there..

I doubt that any dust that collects up there is any more radioactive than dust anywhere else.... if it is at all.

Im going to be looking at getting snake plants too... but I will not be using clay.. I spend my life in the garden, digging, moving soils around. A few pots with dirt in them will not make any difference.

Arrowwind09, it wouldn't make that much of a difference if you're in the soil that much. That made me laugh. Then I realized that I've had this gnawing need to have the air in our house cleaned but never acted upon it because I had a dog and he was constantly coming in and out of the doggie door so I felt what's the use. But he recently died and I now feel it's practical now and possible to get things cleaner. I bought the ozone machine from Paul and a new hepa air filter and will be purchasing a new vaccuum with hepa soon (our current one is 5 years old). Aint no stoppin me now! Thanks for your help.

These windowsill hydrophonic kits seem a bit expensive to me, but the advantage is, that you have everything you need inside the kit.... I wouldnt mind trying something like this

Yes, yes, yes, I now have an ozone machine and really do like it. I've placed it on top of a bilevel stand and the bottom has the hepa filter on it. It has made a big difference in the air quality. When I place them in the bedroom for the night it gives the sensation we're in a sanitarium with our plants and an additional water ionizer air filter machine.

It has an adapter for the car too so when I'm out in the smog filled freeways I can have a little more comfort. Paul was very helpful and I was happy to purchase it from him.

Thanks again!

(My husband won't move even though I feel very strongly that the location of our house with the air quality (near busy streets) has negatively affected my health. Our shih tzu dog never had eye problems until we moved here 4 years ago. Then he had chronic eye runny discharge that later became thick and eventually caused him to become blind in one eye. We never got his eye infections under control no matter how many times we wiped his eyes during the day with colloidal silver or homeopathic drops. This went on for 3 years. Very discouraging and sad to see his eyes crusted over all the time. A coyote got him a couple weeks ago. I wonder if we had the ozone and hepa if our shih tzu wouldn't have had those issues. Oh well. So the best I can do is purify the air as much as I can and hope for the best.)

Would a ozone generator set up to put ozone in the intake air duct of your central air handler unit or would one of these uv units that are made for you air intake system be best or would a ozone generator just set in like your bedroom and moved around the house work best? I do have some mold in my air intake and fan in my central air handler as most do.

MS, did you get one of the Enaly room ozonztor from ebay?, I believe I have seen that the model 200 & 500 both looked good for the price,...does anyone know about these? Probably made in china as I think these were sold from there.
