Default Cleaning our indoor air

Ted Hutchison has reminded me of the dangers and health hazards of polluted air. For over 4 years I've been telling my husband the location of our house which is surrounded by 12 lanes of busy traffic from two sides of our house is a problem. I can hear the traffic non-stop. I even have soft soothing classical music playing 24 hours a day to help bring a peaceful environment in the house.

I'm looking for a solution. Moving is the best but my hubby isn't on board with it.

What air purifier would be the best in purifying the air.

I have 15 house plants throughout our 1500 sq. ft. house to help clean the air but I don't think it's enough.

Help.

I can't recommend an air cleaner, and I don't know if they're still selling them, but steer clear of the Sharper Image "Ionic Breeze" I bought two years ago because there were no replacement filters to buy and they were silent (no fan). Well, I still have one in my bedroom, but it's off more than it's on.

The grid collects dust, and makes zapping noises when dirty...well, sometimes after a couple of hours of being cleaned and with hardly anything on it, the thing starts making noise. Once a moth flew into it in summer, and it started on fire.

One that looks good on the TV commercials is the Oreck, but if it's anything like their vacuum cleaners, I'd avoid that one too.

Plants are great! I have a 'black thumb', but I manage to keep at least one or two in every room, replacing when necessary.

I agree with K2c about the “ionic breeze” but what I have heard is that it puts out ozone. Now while ozone is good at cleaning and deodorizing a room it is also not something that you want to be breathing on a continual basses.

For simple filtering of dust and small particulates a simple thing to do would be to go to your thermostat, on it you should find a switch to allow the furnace fan to run continuously. This will allow you to use the filter in it to filter all the air in the house. Of course you might first want to replace its filter with a nice new clean one. This is the filter that most everyone forgets to replace at regular intervals. Which reminds me I should check mine.

Now if you are interested in deodorizing a room and killing any “bugs” here is something you might try.
Get a simple florescent shop light, ones with the two bare 4 foot lamps. These are usually in an $8-10 range and they frequently come without the lamps, which in this case is OK because you don’t want to use the standard lamps. Instead you want to get a couple lamps that only put out ultra-violet light. (UV) These are identical to the regular lamps except that they forgot to but the florescent coating on the inside of the glass, naturally you can expect to pay more for these lamps because they left this coating off. Also they are going to be a little hard to find, you will probably have to go to an electrical supply store and they may even have to order them. Asking for tanning bed lamps may help them understand what you are looking for.

You also will want a small room fan, nothing fancy, just something to create a slight breeze in the room.

OK you are now ready to sanitize a room. Choose a room and place the fan so it will blow air around in the room and turn it on. Close or cover all the heating vents. Place the lamp fixture in such away that it will illuminate as much of the room as possible. Plug the lamp into an extension cord and run the cord out the door, close door, and plug cord into nearest outlet to turn on the lamp.

Next and very important put a sign on door telling everyone to stay out! You do not what to even think about looking directly at these lamps when they are lit. Severely sun burnt eyeballs will result before you even realize it is happening.

However this UV light is guarantied to give any “bugs” in the room a bad hair day. Plus this strong UV will also produce ozone and should eat any strange odors that the fan is blowing around. The blocking of the heating vents keeps the ozone confined in the room. About 15 – 30 minutes should give a fresh smelling germ free room.

There's a removable piece that clamps onto the front of the unit that puts out the ozone, we didn't always use it though. It's on there now, but it's been in the off position for a couple of weeks now, got fed up with removing and cleaning that grid. Ready to put it out to pasture with the other one.

Here's a site that you may want to check out, they must be ok, because they don't recommend the Ionic Breeze.

Youtube External link: Miele Vacuum Cleaners Work. Miele Vacuums are Truly HEPA.
In this video a vacuum salesmen/consumer advocate measures most popular vacuum brands with a particle counter and all kick up lots of dust and other allergens into the air, because they are not truly sealed air-tight, they are cheaply made. The only one that is well sealed. that can actually clean the air from dust, pollen and other allergens as measured by a particle counter is the more expensive made in USA, Miele brand.

I think a Miele vacuum would be a good option so that you clean the air and floor, unlike most vacuums where you clean the floor but scatter many particles to the air everytime you clean your house.

I recently bought this. https://www.airpurifiersandfilters.co...r-purifier.php

It is absolutely quiet. No fans. This can be a minus, because it takes longer than a hepa filter to work. However, in theory, it destroys many microbes. It does not filter them, so there is nothing to clean. It brings in cool air, heats to 400F degrees, uses 52 watts, destroy all those buggers which float out the top harmless. I can feel a column of slightly warm air coming out the top at about 4 inches above the unit. No ozone. However, it does not dispel odors. So far, I'm satisfied. Absolutely no maintenance, except occasional dusting of the unit. It took me a while to find the switch to turn off the led light. I don't need lights in my bedroom. Filtered purifiers just trap live things. This unit fries them.

I used this for many years. https://www.surroundair.com/ionic-air-purifier.htm It has an UV light in it, plus a deep multi-layered filter with an HEPA filter as one of the layers. Filter replacement is required at least twice a year.

I want to clean air that is contaminated with car exhaust. When I search for air purifiers they don't mention this ability.

There was a product that gave out ozone and claimed that was a good thing. What was the name of them? Living Air Purifiers. Can ozone be good sometimes?

Ozone is good at cleaning the air. You just don't want to be breathing the air while it is being cleaned.

Great suggestions. Thanks.

I'm leaning towards the LivingAir purifier. It uses ozone and I think it would do a good job cleaning the air.

I would use a dual system. Because you are near a freeway and likely getting radio active stuff dumped on you you want something that can remove very small particulates of material. A high grade hepa system is for this.

then I would ozonate the air. Enaly makes a geat ozone room air purifier... this is actually the machine that cured my friends wifes' lung cancer. She simply slept in the room with it. Ozone will kill molds, fungus and all germs as well as bind on and nutrailze many chemicals. In some cases the ozone makes the chemical molecule heavier so it falls to the floor then it can be vaccumed away.. a hepa system on the vaccum is helpful too.

Arrowwind09, I'm in the process of deciding between the enaly and the living air but in the next couple days I'll be purchasing one or the other. Big decision but I'm excited and hopeful....I think I'll just go with the Enaly because you speak so highly of it. You recommended getting an ozone machine to put in my ears to kill candida that may be causing my tinnitus. Would simply having the ozone in the room while I sleep work or do you think having another machine is worth it. I need to find me a manual or book that gives details on how to safely use these machines. Thanks for all your help.

Call Paul at this site and talk to him about ozone machines... he sells the best at a reasonable price... of course you can always get better in the $5,000 and up range... but his machines are good and he is very knowlegable about applications.. also ask him about breathing in ozone gas... he has totally debunked the dangers of breathing in ozone... inquire about what happens when he makes ozonated olive oil.

https://www.ozonatedoilonline.com/home.html

the one for doing your ears is about $50, the room purifier was about $180 if I recall. I dont think he sells all the enlay machines... maybe just the room purifier.. you will have to look.... no time for me today.. ranch work calls...

Thanks Arrowwind09. I left Paul a message and put a bid on an enaly on ebay yesterday. I was worried about air quality before Fukishima but that has thrown me over the edge. I appreciate your help and the continuous hope it brings to try new means of seeking healthier and safer living. BTW, I also purchased some gamma lids as your suggestion for sealing buckets for food storage. They are awesome and easy.

There are a lot of plants that help with air quality. The first that comes to mind is the snake planet, which if you google you can find the NASA study on certain plants for air quality and there's a building somewhere in india that has the best air quality in the world if I'm not mistaken and there's articles about the plants they use. Snake planet if I'm not mistaken works at night though, so this one is recommended in your bedroom, but they are dangerous if you have pets that might consume them.
You don't want soil in your house as well, due to bugs, mold and other issues. The best options are the clay pellets, which is extremely easy to find in Europe and when I was in Germany a few months ago I saw them everywhere including the airport, but in the USA they are really hard to find. You have to go to a hydrophobic store or buy them online, which I buy the clay pebbles on ebay. I only use water and miracle grow and the plants grow better than when I used to use soil.

Other good things to improve air quality in your house is to get rid of carpet. I know many people love carpet and how they feel on your bare feet, but they really are nasty compared to tile or wood floors. I would also install an UVC light on my HVAC as well as a thicker air filter.
