The FDA will roll over Dr Oz like a steam roller if he continues to battle the apple juice companies, even though he is right.

As far as testing the juice to see whether the arsnic is organic or inorganic, that shouldn't be up to the Dr Oz show, that should be up to the FDA.

I don't support Dr Oz on many issues, including his view on vaccines, however, I give him credit for opposing the sugar industry and now the apple juice industry, and going against the FDA.

I wish you luck Dr Oz but I think they will throw you under the bus the same as they do anyone who opposes them.

I am not a huge fan of Oz either. But he does agree with some things we agree on therefor is not all bad

Oz has a face to the public that the FDA does not have. He could turn the apple industry and all their regulations on its head if he keeps at it. He also has support from Oprah. The FDA cannot afford to battle here. She could buy the FDA if she were inclined... now there's an Idea!

Its as simple as this. Why are we importing arsenic tainted apples? 60% of all apples made into juice are imported. Why is criteria for imports less than what we expect of our own farmers?

I wish Oz luck on this one. There are millions of Moms tuning into him every day and they are now throwing their apple juice away and demanding and answer.

I like Dr Oz. He is not afraid to give his support to the complementary and alternative world at times.

It is bad enough that apple seeds contain cyanide. Is that even tested in the juice? I'll bet apples, no matter where they come from, are full of pesticides. I use to have 24 fruit trees. 12 of them were various species of apple. I always lost more that half my crop due to pests, such as coddling moth. I would not use melathione as producers used. Sebastopol, CA claims to be the apple capitol of USA. They grow mostly gravenstien, which is the favorite for apple juice producers. The farmers absolutely use pesticides non stop from blossom to harvest. I have experience in this knowledge.

Same as California grapes for the wine industry. Constantly dusting. That's why I do not to buy CA wine. I'd rather do Italian or Australian.

I have not yet seen Dr oz, but I do hope he wins this one,Iv'e noticed that some of the apples are rather tasteless lately, I think the trouble is they are picking them too early and putting them in cold storage, we are importing apples from New Zealand at the momen't goodness knows why we have apple farmers going to the wall here because they can't sell their produce, the same with the orange growers.

I don't believe in this organic / inorganic metal thing. On the element chart, there is only one arsenic. Actually it is considered a metaloid. BTW, apple seeds do contain cyanide. Apple juice makers try to keep the seeds out while processing.

This is from an HSI news alert.
---------------------------------

From Jenny Thompson at Health Science Institute.

Dear Reader,

When you're beloved by millions, and you call yourself "America's Doctor " and then you actually go ahead and trademark that phrase, you've got to figure that sooner or later you're going to get some backlash.

Well...Dr. Oz just got his backlash.

It wasn't all that bad, really -- just a mild smackdown by the FDA and some light mockery from the Associated Press and other media outlets. It's not like he had to pose for an embarrassing mug shot or apologize to Oprah on national TV.

You may have heard a little buzz about this "controversy."

On a recent episode of his afternoon TV show, Dr. Oz warned that several brands of apple juice contain disturbing levels of arsenic.

The FDA quickly put out a statement to refute the warning with two key points: 1) Arsenic in apple juice is organic, which isn't harmful to humans. The inorganic form is poison. 2) FDA testing of apple juice shows much lower levels of total arsenic than Dr. Oz' testing.

In fact, the FDA tested some of the very same juice batches that Dr. Oz tested.

Awkwaaaard!

A producer for the Oz show told the AP that Dr. Oz doesn't agree that organic arsenic is as safe as generally believed. Even so, the great Oz himself admitted that he would continue giving apple juice to his kids.

BUT...he added that he's concerned about the cumulative effects of arsenic intake in people who drink apple juice for many years.

THAT point -- the cumulative intake -- is the real controversy here. And I believe it's a HUGE concern behind closed doors at the FDA.

-----------------------------------------------------------
A worrisome game of chicken
-----------------------------------------------------------

Earlier this year I told you about the dirty little secret in chicken feed.

During WWII, the FDA approved the use of Roxarsone -- a chicken feed additive that contains organic arsenic.

Roxarsone was in wide use by the 60s. And then sometime after the TURN OF THE CENTURY someone at the FDA finally got around to asking the question: "Could this stuff be bad for the people we're supposed to be protecting?"

Answer: Uh oh.

The arsenic in Roxarsone is organic. But when the FDA finally got around to mounting a study, they found that chickens fed Roxarsone contained higher amounts of inorganic arsenic compared to chickens that were fed none of the drug.

So when you filter organic arsenic through BILLIONS of chickens, what you have is a society that may have ingested traces of inorganic arsenic, day after day, year after year, for DECADES!

-----------------------------------------------------------
Cancer connection
-----------------------------------------------------------

Besides killing parasites, Roxarsone does two things that chicken farmers love: It increases the weight of chickens, and gives the meat a pleasant pink color that looks good in the grocery store.

And it's that "pink" part that's troublesome.

Roxarsone makes chicken meat pink by promoting the growth of tiny blood vessels. I've mentioned this process, called angiogenesis, many times. It's the method that cancer cells use to supply blood that's needed to make tumors grow.

Three years ago, researchers showed that Roxarsone prompted angiogenesis in human cell lines. Which is exactly the result nobody wanted to see because more than two million pounds of Roxarsone are added to U.S. chicken feed each year.

But not this year.

This past June, the FDA announced that Alpharma -- the Pfizer subsidiary that makes Roxarsone -- would no longer sell the product in the U.S. This voluntary action was based on FDA research, so you can be pretty sure that it was one of those kicking and screaming "voluntary" actions.

Of course, it all boils down to this: The FDA knows how dangerous it may be for the U.S. population, which gorges itself daily on tens of thousands of tons of chicken, to be getting constant exposure to trace inorganic arsenic.

So knowing that, does Dr. Oz' fear of our cumulative arsenic intake really deserve an FDA scolding and media mockery?

Maybe the arsenic in apple juice will turn out to be a small concern, but until just recently, nobody was afraid of chickenfeed either.

...and another thing

This REALLY bothers me...

While reading the Associated Press article about Dr. Oz' apple juice blowup, one quote jumped out. It's from a report on Dr. Oz' website.

"American apple juice is made from apple concentrate, 60 percent of which is imported from China. Other countries may use pesticides that contain arsenic, a heavy metal known to cause cancer."

Okay, two things...

One: The FDA says that they had no problem at all allowing the use of the organic arsenic chickenfeed additive Roxarsone to be used for nearly an entire generation. But then someone ran some tests and -- uh oh -- looks like this stuff might not be so good!

On the same hand, the agency assures us that arsenic levels in apple juice are fine. No problem. Drink all you want!

But if we're importing tons of apple concentrate that might have been exposed to pesticides containing inorganic arsenic...shouldn't we do what Dr. Oz did and revisit the testing to make sure there's no margin of error?

In light of the surprising change in our knowledge of Roxarsone, wouldn't that be the prudent thing to do?

And Thing Number Two: Did you see that statistic that just whizzed by? Go back and look. More than HALF of the concentrate used to make U.S. apple juice comes from CHINA.

Seriously!?

Isn't it bad enough that nearly everything we own is stamped with the words, "Made in China"?

But now we can't even grow our own APPLES!?

To Your Good Health,

Jenny Thompson

Isnt it cyanide thats in apricot kernals that makes them effective against cancer? or is it just the B17?

Hemlock as organic arsenic. Surely in large concentrations, but clearly a killer.

For myself I am moving to rabbit instead of chicken. Rabbit is easy to procduce and multiplies, well, like rabbits. A very cost effective protien source and I like it better than chicken. Plant clover in your lawn as a supplemental food source for them. They are so much easier than chickens and can live outside all winter, even at 30 below.

It is laetrile that is in the apricot kernels. Cyanide is poison. I don't know what it would cure. I understand that some arsenic is good for you, just not in concentration.

I used to be a partner in a rabbit tree. I built the database to maintain the hierarchy. We would be careful of 'incest'. I was not the one to do the killing though. That was the job of the other partner. I was mostly an investor with a voice. We would sell to local stores. The problem was that we could not sell to larger stores, because they would only accept a regular supply.

But many scientists and doctors are now coming to recognise arsenics positive qualities. Recent research suggests that small amounts of arsenic may actually benefit human health and the infamous substance is already used as a treatment for certain types of blood cancer.

Despite its reputation as a first-rate poison, it does have a better side and scientists have recently discovered several beneficial uses.Arsenics role in the treatment of disease is long and varied. Doctors have used arsenicals at various stages in history to treat sleeping sickness, tuberculosis and skin diseases, among other illnesses.

While arsenics use in contemporary medicine has been severely curtailed, it still plays a role in treating severe parasitic diseases. Outside medicine, it is a key component of semi-conductor devices, mainly in the form of gallium arsenide.

I would have bought rabbit. I've been eyeing the squirrels in our yard lately. So plump and healthy looking. (Yeah, coz they eat all the bird food!!) But I've heard they taste good and since you can control what they eat if they live in your yard, you could give them all the organic nuts they want, and no chemicals! Why let them get hit by cars and go to waste?!
