\r\n \r\n Years ago, when I learned that cheap dog food was made from disgusting things like sickly pets that have been euthanized, and rendered together with many other horrible things, I stopped THAT day, got rid of all the food I had on hand, and started to buy more natural/organic products, and I read ALL labels now too!

\nSome pets were building an immunity to anesthetics and medications, due to all the left over meds they were consuming via dead animals I lost an otherwise healthy dog years back to cancer at the age of 8 yrs. old. I believe that feeding the cheaper foods had a lot to do with it \r\n

\n PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Defensor 3 is for vaccination of healthy dogs, cats, cattle, and sheep 3 months of age or older as an aid in preventing rabies. The vaccine is prepared from cell-cultire-grown, chemically inactivated rabies virus which originated from Louis Pasteur\'s original isolate in 1882. The inactivated virus is formulated with a highly purified adjuvant and is packaged in liquid form.
\n DISEASE DESCRIPTION: Rabies is a worldwide, high mortality disease affecting mammalian species. Wild animals are common vectors of the disease and the major source of transmission to humans and domestic animals. Despite successful attempts over the years to reduce the incidence of rabies, recent published reports indicate that in the U.S. more than 30,000 people undergo treatment for possible exposure. Domestic animals are the major source of exposure for humans. Since 1980, the most commonly reported rabid domestic animals have been cats, cattle and dogs. In 1990, a total of 4881 cases of animal rabies were reported to the Centers for Disease Control by all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Susceptibility to rabies varies according to pet species. Rabies is not a treatable disease and suspect pets are usually quarantined until a clinical diagnosis is made, at which time they are destroyed.

\nThe route of infection can be oral, respiratory, or parenteral. Following infection, a paralytic syndrome ensues, emerging as either the "furious" or "dumb" form. "Furious rabies" is characterized by unusual aggression; "dumb rabies" by lethargy and a desire to avoid contact. Respiratory failure is the immediate cause of death.

\n SAFETY AND EFFICACY: Because Defensor 3 is produced on an established cell line, it has safety advantages over inactivated brain-origin rabies vaccines. Tissue-origin vaccines contain extraneous protein in addition to rabies antigen that can lead to autoimmune disease.

Thanks JayZee! I knew vaccinations were a problem, but I bring my "furkids" in for them when necessary. I\'d feel terrible if they had contact with a rabid animal, or one with distemper, and died of that illness because they didn\'t have their shots. Where we live, they have exposure to raccoons, prairie dogs, squirrels, coyotes, etc.

\nAlso, besides being required by the state, there\'s no getting around it if you travel about with your pets, as we have in the past, and will in the future.

\nMy girl is suffering from seizures, including clusters, since last February. Believe me, I\'ve read almost all there is to read online and at the library, and vaccinations are definitely a "red flag". \r\n

I\'ve been using Nature\'s Recipe for my two dogs, who weigh 50-60 lbs. I add a 1/4 can of canned food like Canidae for flavor. I also buy around 4-5 lbs of low fat ground beef when it on sale, fry it up, drain the fat, and store it in the fridge. So, for around a week, I\'ll use that to flavor the dry instead of canned. I also add a drizzle of olive oil to their meals.

\nI\'ve read about the raw feeding, and it doesn\'t appeal to me. It isn\'t very convenient, and if they don\'t want to eat it right away, it sits somewhere and gets funky. Also, if you go on vacation, it\'s not very doable.

\nI just try to buy the better, higher quality brands. Something organic/holistic/natural. I refuse to feed cheap brands like Walmart\'s Ol\' Roy or even Purina.\r\n
