Almost every day I drizzle Olive Oil over my dog's food, they also really like Coconut Oil, which I give them at least once a week.

Everyone at some point in time has heard the tale that oils are healthy for your dog, or will keep them regular etc. but do these tales have merit? Are oils beneficial your dog?

The oils that you give to your dog should not have a foul odor, and for the most part should be odorless. Oil should be stored in the dark and in a dark bottle so the light does not affect the oil's effectiveness.


Coconut oil is effective in dogs, or in other animals that have consistent hairballs. It is no longer thought of as a saturated fat but is seen as having antibacterial, anti-allergen and increases energy levels as well the coat. Coconut oil is recommended for dogs that suffer from arthritis and dogs that have abnormal thyroid function. If your dog has these problems, than coconut oil may be the solution you have been searching for. While using coconut oil you should use no more than � teaspoon per ten pounds of dog. It has beneficial healing powers when applied topically to abrasions or cracked paws.

Extra virgin olive oil is a classic in puppy care and protects the heart and makes the skin extra healthy. It is very rich, can aid digestion and is effective for the treatment of aural inflammation. Olive oil has many benefits for humans as well; skin, hair and internal benefits have been known for centuries. Extra virgin olive oil grooming products are available in specialty pet stores, and may soothe your pet of any skin or fur woes.

Sunflower oil is crucial oil if you have a dog with food allergies. Sunflower seed oil is a good oil to increase the energy level in your dog as well.

There are many oils that you can supplement into your dogs food. These oils may be added over the food, mixed in with the food, given in capsule form if available or given to the dog orally, or in a treat to ensure ease

of ingestion, increase the energy in the dog, lead to a shinier coat, and lead to better digestion in the animal.

With trial and error, you may be able to find the perfect oil to benefit your dog and supplement their food.

My friend adds Olive oil to her dogs' dry food every other day. Also gravies
from her own cooked meat meals occasionally.

We add oils in the form of DermaCaps liquid to our dog's food every day - it's composed of linoleic acid and vitamin e - it keeps his coat helathy and his skin is not itchy, even with the weather changes...

Whenever I babysit a dog I always put some kind of oil in their food along with a raw egg and sometimes kefir. Another good one is the oil from a sardine can. I like giving the dog back looking a little more bright eyed and glossy coated.

Yes, sardines, we sometimes buy a tin of sardines in water and mix it in with the food over a few days, the oils form the sardines themselves are also great

I have copied and pasted the info in this thread and will certainly put some it to use!
Pippa, our wonderful four legged friend is currently poorly.Her Lymph Nodes are swollen, and we are giving her bicarbonate of soda orally, and mixing Hemp Oil in her food. The Lymph Nodes have gone smaller and she is looking more like her usual self. We have a friend who is a vet and she is also checking Pippa, so we have an expert at hand should we need her!
