First time poster here asking a question that has probably been answered loads of times.......sorry
I have just recently started taking an interest in vitamins but think i might be getting a bit carried away as my shelf is stacked full of them.
My lifestyle is quite hectic, working 10-12 hours a day with little sleep and not eating properly, usually having a few beers in the evening i also had a melanoma removed a few years ago so avoid sunshine now and maybe have a vitamin D Deficiency....so i thought i would cheat and take vitamin suppliments
I plan to take these suppliment as i have read are quite good for you....
High Potency dry vitamin D-3- 1,000 iu
Acai capsules freeze dried 100% pure acai
Spirulina Tabs
Chlorella & Fermented Turmeric tabs
Alpha lipoic Acid capsules - 300mg
I imagine it would not be a good idea to shovel these down my throat at once?
Anyone got some advice on how i should manage vitamin suppliments please.
I am really just looking to give my body a bit of a natural energy boost.
IMHO acia is a multilevel marketing overpriced, overhyped garbage product.
1000iu of vitamin d won't be enough for you. Without testing for vitD levels, you could easily start with 5000iu of D3. Here is recommendation of Vitamin D Council.
Quote:
If you use suntan parlors once a week or if you live in Florida and sunbathe once a week, year-round, do nothing. However, if you have little UVB exposure, my advice is as follows: healthy children under the age of 1 years should take 1,000 IU vitamin D3 per dayover the age of 1, 1,000 IU vitamin D3 per every 25 pounds of body weight per day. Well adults and adolescents should take 5,000 IU vitamin D3 per day. Around 23 months later have a 25-hydroxyvitamin D blood test, either through ZRT or your doctor. https://www.vitamindcouncil.org/healt...eficient.shtml
I'm a firm believer that herbs should not be extracts or tinctures. Just plain. However that fermented turmeric sounds very good in theory. I do like fermented products for their probiotic properties, but the fermented turmeric is not for that purpose. It is true that curcumin is not easily bio-available. But some herbs are not for a reason. Herbs with saponins, for example, can be dangerous for you to force them into your system. However they are extra, very beneficial in the digestive system. They just don't get along very well with red blood cells. Now, curcumin could be different, but in my opinion, it is just better to take more of the straight turmeric without added stuff. So I guess I'm saying that I have no experience with the fermented turmeric. I don't think it would hurt, but you could be spending too much money for such a specialized product.
Why are you wanting to take ALA? It is an antioxidant that is already made by the body. It can lower blood sugar levels, so supplementing is helpful with diabetes. It can breach the brain barrier, so it can be helpful for strokes and tissue protection. But I'm just curious why you think you should supplement with it.
Tumeric should be taken with biopeperine 5mg or coconut oil, raw and virgin for best absorption.
Coconut oil will do you a world of good. Look into it.
The spirulina and chorella is a good and help you to futher detox
ALA is excellent but you will have a better effect if you take it with L carnitine, 500mg
You can take these all at once or take half in the am and half in the pm. Take B vitamins always in the am... they keep some people awake.
I have no opinion on Acica. For plant based assistance I like pycogenol and it take a lot of it.. also add bueberries and currants to your diet.
Commit yourself to getting one extra hour of sleep a day.
I have been learning from a few very expert Naturopathic doctors lately. So for a B vitamin I am recommending standard process Cataplex B due to the amazing results they get with it in treating AFib. You can get it on Amazon.com and every high stressed person should be on a b complex of some sort.

My family has a history of heart problems and i myself suffer from palpitations and irregular heart beats from time to time, i read that ALA could be helpful with this problem.
I also work in a very dirty enviroment working with concrete and read that ALA can be good for your skin.......thats the only reasons i take ALA.
I think you might be right about the Acai because i have never felt any better when taking it but i thought, it is full of all this goodness so must be good for my body.
I will give the tumeric and coconut oil a try, i have checked a few places for coconut oil and it says its great for cooking with......is this the same type of coconut oil?

Hi jpop My medicine chest is loaded with vitamins, minerals and herbs. This is preferred as opposed to prescription meds and OTC drugs. I take some everyday, and some I take several times a week. I'm not strict at all about how I mix and match them.
I do have turmeric caps and use Nature's Way coconut oil, I like Nutiva too, they can be used for cooking or baking. I put some in my morning coffee quite often, just as a way to ingest some.
I've tried Acai, but it's very expensive and for years I've been drinking pomegranate juice instead. I get a good price on the Langer's brand at Costco, and I have a couple of fresh ones on my counter now, that cost $1 each. https://www.natmedtalk.com/wiki/Pomegranate

Hi,
That's what i do, i just have a a pick and mix each day
I live in the north of Scotland and at this time of the year it's dark and miserable outside.....its dark when i get up in the morning and dark when i get home from work and the rain and wind is non stop.
I am looking for something to give me an energy boost and improove my mood.
Speaking of Scotland, I've been enjoying reruns of the BBC Monarch of the Glen. I'm in love with the Glenbogle Estate. https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiped...wiki/Glenbogle Yes. I know it is fictional, however one can dream. It never rains on that show. The sky is crisp and beautiful. Maybe you should move there.

When the sky is crisp and beautiful here.....its still freezing! Don't be fooled .......must be good actors!
But i suppose i have the same beautiful scenery around me. When i look out my window i have the hills to view but you don't appreciate where you live and us Scots just dream of hot sunny days.
My high tech company had a plant in Hillend, Scotland. A person, who became a friend, would visit California occasionally. Interesting fellow.
1. He said Scots never ever want to leave the country, even though lay offs were beginning to happen.
2. I had to ask him to repeat most of what he said. Very thick accent.
3. When we would go places, he always wanted to get in my car on the drivers side.
4. He said most of the older homes had plumbing and wiring on the outside walls. No one wants to tear down history.
5. From hearing of his homeland, I must somehow find a way to get there for a visit. In the rural areas, but I don't think I could drive on the wrong side of the road.

Thanks for the info.
Hi jpop - in terms of getting you an energy boost, forgo the acai and look at borojo capsules instead - I have been using it for several months and never felt better, so much so that I actually joined Nutropical, the company that sells it. It gives you a metabolism boost plus it is much higher in antioxidant and vitamin content than anything else -
I used to live in London, and know very well, the dark/dark scenario, but then again, I love winter and "weather" so I was happy there!
Good on you for taking control of your health, I recently have and can't tell you how much better I feel, and this website here is an invaluable source of info and support!

Thanks for the link Marilyn27....i will look into that.
I agree, this website has great info and helpful people.
If you are maintaining unhealthy habits like habitually drinking alcohol(which ruins nutrient absorption among many other bad things) and avoiding the sun on purpose, improper sleep, stressed, overworked, then taking supplements will not help like it should. Take my grandma for example, she has diabetes, high blood pressure and takes a few vitamins, sometimes she eats a healthy fruit like grapefruit. But most of the time she has negative health practices and she deteriorates more as time progresses. She continues to drink coffee every morning which will spike her blood sugar and dipping this hardened bread Greeks call Paximadia into it(also bad for blood sugar). So after eating that at breakfast, will eating a mere grapefruit and taking a few vitamins counteract it? I don't think so and I have deal with her health problems taking her to a dermatologist, eye doctor, podiatrist, physical therapy, general practice doctor, etc.
If you do take pills obviously try to take them with food. You also may want to try blending them into a fruit/vegetable smoothie and drinking it. Also you may want to just take a good multi-vitamin. I take the "NSI Synergy 3000 Version 11" multi-vitamin, a serving is considered six capsules a day. I try to take 3 capsules and then hours later the other 3. Search for that multi-vitamin in Google and look how many vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants it contains, it is a good value for the money!
Multi-vitamins are not a good example of "Mixing up vitamins". Manufacturers typically us synthetic or cheap forms. Vitamin C will transform iodine into iodide. Using iodine and selenium at the same time is not helpful either (oxidant vs antioxidant). Magnesium is a natural calcium channel blocker and should not be used together. Magnesium oxide is used by manufacturers because it is cheap, but not very available to the body. Magnesium oxide is the worst of the bindings to use. Green tea extract is high in tannin. Tannins bind with many beneficial compounds in plants such as nutrients and alkaloids preventing the body from utilizing them properly. This is he same reason that people should not take their supplements, herbs, or medications with coffee or tea. Anyway, the other herbs, in that multivitamin may be made useless due to the green tea extract. See what I mean?
