Chlorella already may be bound with zinc from its original environment. I don't know about spirulina. It could mean that is has bound so much already that it won't effectively bind anymore from your body. However, chlorella is used industrially to bind zinc, copper, nickle, and others for detoxification. So, that means that no matter how much it already has, there is room for more. But industrial clean-up uses large quantities.
They bind metals by a few methods. The cell wall, proteins, and peptides. Zinc is a metal. Magnesium is a metal. It would be advisable to keep your ingestion of chlorella and spirulina away from food or other vitamin supplementation. An hour should do it. Actually, it might be best to take the two on an empty stomach.
I have the same situation with taking IP6. The bottle actually says to not take it with food or supplements at the same time due to its capability to bind with certain minerals.
It might be that detoxification won't even occur, unless you take a large quantity of that supplement. They can provide you with minerals (especially magnesium) and vitamins and protein, which means that the body's digestion process causes the alga to release some of its previously bound metals/minerals. Otherwise they would be worthless to you.
I don't think that it will negate the other minerals that drastically, but it would still be beneficial to not take them together.
