Default Whey Protein

Okay so, I've been reading about whey protein and its benefits. I was originally looking for something that would encourage muscle growth and came across whey protein. What I read was that it also slows the absorbtion of sugars into the bloodstream thus lowering the insulin reaction (very much like our diet) It is about 2net carbs per serving and I'm considering adding this to my diet. Does anyone know more about whey protein and can give me some advice?

Protein isolate (whey or soy) is used in many Atkins recipes, as part of the baking mix. Very good stuff.

However, before you buy, I'd try bodybuilders' stores for a zero carb version. Yours seems to be sweetened. Whey protein isolate comes in 80%, 90% and recently I even bought a 100% protein version. You can get them in a number of flavors, too (vanilla, chocolate etc) and carb content is controlled. In other words, if you tell them you want something with no carbs, they are likely to have it.

thank you. I haven't bought it yet so I will def. ask for a zero carb version. Do you think that it will enhance my weight loss. Actually if it does any of the following I'd be happy:
1 encourage muscle mass growth
2 help the muscles recover faster after a work out (so I can work out everyday instead of every other)
3 promote more weight loss.
4 curb appetite

My regular grocery stores mostly carry the flavored kinds. You have to read both the ingredients and the nutrition label - watch out for things like raw cane syrup and other less refined versions of sugar.

My local organic co-op carries unflavored soy protein isolate. I use this in a flax meal hot cereal mix I make in the winter. I also prefer the unflavored for baking - preferring to use my own vanilla instead of whatever they use to flavor their powders.

The co-op also has whey protein. I have found I have a personal preferance for the soy in most things I make. But it is worth trying each of them.

The other benefit - the soy protein isolate from the co-op is about 1/3 the price per lb as the fancy cans of "body-building" powder.

GOOD LUCK.

The best protein I have used is made by ISO Pure. They make a zero carb version that is really good. Each serving has 50 grams of protein.

Make sure you check the labels of other protein. Some of them only have 25 grams of protein per serving. ISO Pure is not cheap, but when you look at it by cost per gram of protein, it is a very good value.

Your local GNC will have it.

The two are mutual opposites. As you grow muscle, you gain weight - muscle is MUCH heavier than fat, so you will be leaner, but might be heavier. Muscle growth tends to mask weightloss, this is why we usually recommend to use the tape measure rather than scales.

I know the muscle mass weighs more than the fat but, the more muscle mass you have the more fat you burn. Plus you gain muscle mass much slower than you burn fat so usually for some time you loose the fat weight before you gain enough muscle mass to appear that you are gaining weight. It takes alot of time and effort to gain 1lb of muscle mass.

ah so sounds like you're after protein powder to help promote *fat* loss rather than *weight* loss per say, yes?

Either way, I wish you luck - I've been contemplating using a powder as well... can you post now how it goes for you? I'm rather curious!

Blessings,
Lisa

One of the main things I want it for is to boost the recovery time for my muscles between work outs. I always try to push my work out a lil more each time so I am always sore the next day. I would love to get a lil cardio in on the off days but Im usually too sore to do anything more than just walking. (jumping jacks orjogging is def. out) By the second day I'm usually good to go again. I just feel like if I could get a work out in on the off days I could speed things up a bit or get my daily intake up to 90 and still loose 1lb a week. Either way I'd be happy.

That is an interesting thought. Do let the forum know if it works.
