Hello,
Does anyone know if Chamomile tea can cause irregular bleeding and cramps? I drink one cup at night and I love its calming effect. The only trouble is it seems to cause uterine cramping after a few consecutive nights of using it. I stopped using chamomile in the past because one time I started bleeding in between my cycles. I called my doctor and they said the chamomile would not cause that. I stopped the tea and the bleeding stopped. I recently started again (3 nights) because of anxiety issues and now I'm feeling the same cramps but no bleeding yet. I'm really bummed about it because this tea helps calm me immensely before bed. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this problem? My serving consists of just one small cup. I use one Celestial Seasoning tea bag which steeps for 4-5 minutes. So I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen or if there is someone who has great knowledge of herbs can give me some advice. I tried drinking tea made with Passion Flower but it just doesn't have the same calming effect for me as Chamomile does.
Thanks for any help!
Ive never heard of this before but could it be that you have a very unusual reaction? Are you saying that these cramps and bleeding never happen independently of the tea? Try to be very sure for you could be developing some other kind of problem.
If you think it is only the tea causing this I would leave it behind and seek another remedy for relaxation and sleep.
There are homeopathic remedies that can help that will not cause this effect. Neurexan
although they both have some cham. in it at a 2x potency this tiny amount should not bother you, because it is reduced and potentized should not cause you a problem. It might be similar to taking 1 ml of cham.
I drink Chamomile very often, but you may want to try other teas and see if they help you with stress/anxiety such as catnip and valerian root tea
Chamomile has been used for centries and it's considered safe, but you could have a person reaction to it, so give catnip or valerian a try as you might like it as well.
If you are allergic to ragweed, you could also have reactions to chamomile. Reactions though, are normally itching, rashes or stomach cramps. Not bleeding. However, it would be best to avoid chamomile, if you feel it is compromising your health so drastically.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I had no idea there were so many natural products for anxiety, insomnia, etc.
I did not have the problem again (10 months ago) after I stopped the tea but have not tried it again until now. I normally am very regular and do not have cramps in between cycles. So I may keep going and if I get the same reaction then I think it has to be the tea. I've never heard of this reaction either and I know many people drink it.

Thank you! I will try those two. Are there any side effects with Valerian? I seem to remember hearing about some but not sure.

Thankmyou for all the suggestions! I had no idea there were so many out there for anxiety, etc. I don't normally have any trouble with cramping or bleeding between cycles so I don't think something else is going on. So far I've had no blood so might continue and see if it happens again. Last time I had the problem I drank the tea 7 nights. This time I've only had it 3 or 4 nights.

Thank you. I was just curious if anyone else had this same reaction. At this point I have had the bleeding but just the cramping. I'm not allergic to anything thankfully!
Welcome to the forum 4dad! Chamomile tea should not cause uterine cramping or bleeding. Jfh mentioned allergy to ragweed causing abdominal cramps, this is true, as it is in the Asteraceae plant family along with some others like Chrysanthemums, Asters, Sunflowers, etc. If you're allergic to these, you may experience abdominal cramping. However, I have Hay Fever and am allergic to ragweed, but Chamomile doesn't have any negative effects in my case. Here's more info on Chamomile...https://www.natmedtalk.com/wiki/Chamomile
