Default Lose weight by eating more!

Eating larger portions of healthy food is more important than dieting when it comes to staying thin, say scientists.
The US team found people who increased their intake of more high-fibre food like nuts, fruit, youghurt and vegetables actually lost weight.
The Harvard School of Public Health researchers believe consumption of these products left less room for fatty foods.
The study of 120,000 people appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine

This is probably the paper this article is based on
Changes in Diet and Lifestyle and Long-Term Weight Gain in Women and Men

Relationships between Changes in Food and Beverage Consumption and Weight Changes Every 4 Years, According to Study Cohor N Engl J Med 2011; 364:2392-2404

From the image you can see that POTATO CHIPS, POTATOES, and Potato fries are the biggest source of weight gain combined with Sugar Sweetened beverages (this includes HFCS) AND 100% fruit juices.

I think we (UK readers) ought to remember this data comes from the US Nurse Health Study data so the meat consumption is US meat much of which is feedlot produced. UK red meat is mainly grassfed. US dairy is different from UK dairy our cows still spend most of the day outdoors eating grass there are moves to bring them in and take the food to them in pelleted form but it's not happened yet. (Archers fans will be aware that Debbie is trying to talk Brian into starting a big industrial dairy operation)

I thought this paragragh from the paper interesting given my interest in melatonin.
Quote:
Decreases in sleep duration are concordant with the U.S. obesity epidemic.

Data from crosssectional studies and some prospective studies, including a prior analysis of NHS data, support the
relationship of shorter sleep duration with obesity.

In short-term trials, reduced sleep alters leptin, ghrelin, subjective hunger, and preferences for calorie-dense, refined-carbohydrate foods.

Our results suggest that the association between sleep duration and long-term weight gain is characterized by a U-shaped curve — that is, weight gain is lowest among persons who sleep 6 to 8 hours a night and is higher among those who sleep less than 6 hours or more than 8 hours.
I should perhaps also remind UK readers that Americans call crisps chips. So when they talk about potato chips they don't mean the chips we serve with fish but CRISPS that come from a packet. So it's not surprising that people who eat most crisps, chips, potatoes and drink the most sugar/hfcs fizzy drinks gain the most weight. Did we need a study to tell us that?

If you really want to lose weight you have to evaluate your cals/macros a day.

Macros are protein, carbs and fat. Im 70kg and losing weight at mo. I eat 100-120g protein a day, 50g of carbs and fat Im still working on the right sources.

You need all 3 of them as they help each other in different ways. Get these in the right percentage daily (lots of calculators online) along with your vitamins and essential building blocks and you're good to go. They are all, including fat the only way to lose weight.

P.S You gotta get off that backside aswell

Absolutely not true.
It's perfectly possible to eat real foods and lose weight without actually counting calories or carbs.

The Food Revolution - AHS 2011With no calorie counting, no diet products, no hunger? This talk from Ancestral Health Symposium 2011 shows you how to do it the natural way.

The epidemics of obesity and diabetes are continuing to spread across the western world. Now we know why. Modern science has revealed our mistake.

The unnecessary fear of natural food has inadvertently caused us to eat more of the new food that can make us hungrier, make us eat more, make us fat.

Ever more people are realizing the mistake and seeing the solution. The food revolution is here. Please help spread the word once you know.

I think exercise is incredibly important for good health. BUT anyone who thinks it is a necessary component for weight loss is mistaken. I cannot exercise to any extent but that does not mean I have to consciously limit or restrain calorie intake. When you eat real foods that satisfy your appetite naturally you stop eating when you've had sufficient. Getting rid of those foods that promote hunger and cause lethargy solves to problem.
