B-12's Role In Treating Dementia
Another non-cure that may improve one's quality-of-life:
Quote:
In a study involving 30 consecutive mild to moderate dementia patients with vitamin B12 deficiency, results indicate that supplementation with vitamin B12 may reduce delirium associated with dementia.
The patients received 3 intramuscular injection of methylcobalamin (1 mg) in the first week; oral supplementation with methylcobalamin (1 tablet 3 times a day) for 16 weeks; and 1 intramuscular injection of cyanocobalamin (1 mg) once a month, for 6 months.
At intervention end a significant decrease in Delirium Rating Scale scores were observed compared to baseline. However, no significant changes in cognitive function and behavioral symptoms were observed between baseline and study end.
Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "Cognitive function of mild to moderately demented older people with vitamin B(12) deficiency did not significantly change with vitamin B(12) supplementation over a 10-month period. The supplementation reduced delirium associated with dementia."
